I always try to avoid the M6 as we always seem to just sit there whatever time of day we go.

Any other route and we are fine.  So i'd advise going on the M1 and A50.  We went on the M1 from Bedfordshire last Saturday as far as the M45 and it was very clear.

Hi

We've just got back off the lovely M6.  Live in Leicestershire now but family in Cheshire so use the dreadful M6 a lot.

My advice is avoid Friday afternoon and Sunday afternoon like the plague.  The M6 will be an easier route as the A50 has loads of roundabouts and with a caravan will slow you down.

My advice is stick to the M6 but USE THE TOLL ROAD.  The expense is worth every penny and we always go that way whether in the car or car plus van.  It avoids all the black spots around Birmingham.

I live right by the toll road, and travel to suffolk a few times a year... We always pay to use the toll road because between Jct 8 - 10 M6 can often result in the West Midlands biggest car park

What time of day? We did the same journey on same day and had no real delays except in roadworks, where speed limit was cut to 50, and on one short section where traffic slowed to 30mph for about a mile. But this was on Friday evening - from 8pm onwards.

I'd stick to the motorway, but also use the toll road on a journey to or from the east of Brum. Pricey, but just about worth it, especially during peak hours. But then, the real trick is avoid peak hours.

We live in Wellingborough and EVERY time i thought 'the M6 will be fine' i have ended up bumper to bumper as you come off the M6 toll south of Stafford and then all the way to Junction 16 at Crewe.

If we are going to the North West we always go via M1, A50 (which is always quiet) then take the Stoke Ring Road A500 north and get on the M6 at Junction 16.

I think on paper the A50 is more miles, but when you are towing it feels loads more chilled out and quiet.

Hope this helps

Wallace

M1- A50 definatly.  I use this route regularly as a professional \driver .A50 is a nice road. When you get to the football stadium at Stoke, take the right fork from the rounabout, the sat nav. usually takes you left, and join M6 lower down- A500 I think it is.

I agree, live near J16, it thins out after that going north, and Preston isn't that far awy from here. M1-A5 will put around 1.5-maybe 2 hours on your travelling time. The toll road is well worth the fee. Use it and there won't be a prob. The M6 going south is busy on Mondays, with all the lorries, but not so bad going North.

To get the quietest out of the M6, go Sunday to Sunday!
