Hi
I saw a reference to a post on here somewhere from a ex caravan dealer that gave advice on how to get a good deal when buying a new caravan? Anyone know that post as I have tried to search for it and cant find it anywhere. And as always trying to find a good deal!!

We bought new at the end August/beginning of September last year and are very happy with the deal we got. We shopped around visiting and phoning various dealers for their "best" price on what we wanted (GT60 540/6). Then negotiated what we could to get a better price. Then phoned our nearest dealer and asked them to price match the lowest price we'd been offered less another £500. He couldn't answer straight away so we had to wait while he worked out figures (it was like putting an offer in on a house!) but he called back a few hours later and agreed. We paid the deposit the next day and the balance when the van arrived in November, so if we'd had a van to sell that would have given us time to sell it privately I guess.

As soon as the Bailey Ranger 540/6 came out i knew it was the one i wanted. But i had to wait a year until i could order it. I wanted to see it again before ordering and the dealer who had one in stock was an hours drive away. We went to see it but then i saw the GT60 4 berth and just knew that was an even better version. This dealer was offering a starter pack so we then went to another dealer who had the GT60 540/6 in stock and asked him to match the other dealer and he would. Then went to our most local dealer to match and he did
So shop around is the advice i give to you but buy from your local dealer so that when you have to take it back for servicing you don't have to go too far

Trying to find a "good deal" is much easier and far less important in the long run than "finding a good dealer".
The dealer with low margins is doing it somehow and if its not in massive turnover its likely to be in "service and customer support".
Buying a caravan is almost by definition not buying something inherently fault free and your contract to get it sorted lies solely with the dealer and largely in reality with his goodwill. Its not like buying a SONY TV where 90% will be perfect and those not will be quickly replaced; all vans I have ever purchased needed a level of dealer warranty support, some a lot more than others.
My opinion anyway; a fair deal with a trusted dealer who will support me is far more use than a sharp deal with a big player where we are just another punter.

I think Sony would be horrified to see a figure of 10% rejection on their TVs. Is the number of new caravans that are faulty, that high?

I never ever go for the cheapest deal I can get, on anything.
You always pay for it in the long run.

So you'll go through the checkout twice at a supermarket instead of using a BOGOF deal for something you happen to want two of, just because you don't want to take advantage of the cheapest deal?!
