Hi To all
Im going to Paignton next weekend camping for 10 nights. I was wondering what the Traffic would be like on the M5 Early Sunday morning we are travelling from the North East.Don't know the best time to set off.
We done the same journey last August on a Saturday and it was a nightmare Thats why we are going on a Sunday and returning on the Wednesday.
Cheers
We went down to Hillhead near paignton a few weeks ago. We set off from north wales at 9:00 the night before and at around one in the morning pulled into michaelwood services and slept overnight (£15 charge). Set off at eight the next morning and a couple of hours later arrived there with no traffic problems.
Comming home at mid-day there were awful queues going down in the opposite direction and a few bad ones on our side.

hi, I live in Taunton, near m5,j25, Fridays going south in the school or bank holidays, this can start on Thursday evening, especially bank hols are bumper 2 bumper,at times, at a stand still.
Northbound on b/hol w/end,day trippers returning on Sundays or the Monday are bad as well.
late Saturdays can be bad for those vacating holiday lets.
i think you should be alright, unless they close the motorway, you might find it busy than normal but if your going early you should clear most of the troble, fingers crossed, im going to cornwall over the bank holiday weeknd end and ill be on the road by 7am and should be there between 10 and 11.
i utterly despise traffic jams especially the ones that are totally pointless or caused by idiots who cant drive properly or keep their vehicles maintained.
as for unnecessary roadworks grrrrr

Sunday will be a huge improvement on saturday especially if you leave early.
We went two weeks ago and left on the friday with an overnight stop at sedgemoor, it was very busy, we travelled back on the sunday morning just over a week later and was quiet in both directions....great.
Returning on the wednesday will be good too, just leave time to pass birmingham before 2.30pm if you can, so again leave early.
Hi We've just returned yesterday (Sunday) from Torquay it took 5 hours no stops to Chorley in Lancashire,it was a very good run as we left at 10am, no hold ups.
Going down there we left at 8am on a Thursday again had no probs it took 5 hours bit of a slow down as you get on A380 but kept moving.
Travelling from Oxford to the West Country I often use the A303. Mainly because I love this road and it's scenery. Alas, even the 303 becomes agonisingly slow on a BH. Usually it's worse coming back. Most of the problems seem to occur where dual carriageways bits meet single and people don't merge properly. Also the statutory mass slam on the brakes past Stonehenge doesn't help matters.
It is absolutely sickening to enjoy the fast dual carriageway A30 Devon / Cornwall end and then grind to a standstill on the most significant part of the journey.
I really wish they would dual this road all the way from Basingstoke to Honiton. This would make it flow so much better and would be just as quick or almost as taking the M4 / M5 possibly helping said M5 problems. But last I heard they had cancelled all planned improvements. I guess they need more money for invading countries.
I did the exact journey but the other way around last sunday. I left Paignton at 9.15am and arrived back in Hull at 4pm with one stop. The traffic was fairly busy but moving freely on the M5 in both directions.
Hi, we travelled from South Wales to Falmouth on the 23rd July and the traffic was no problem at all, clear all the way. But, on the way home on Saturday 30th it took us 7 hours to get home. The main problem was the A30, but the M5 was slow. Beware, we also witnessed a caravan turn over, quite frightening. Good Luck
