Hi Friends Can anybody shed some light please.

Ok here goes I decided to upgrade my caravan CD player to a new one this afternoon, the old one was a Sony and the new one was a Sony Install was pretty straightforward as the rear connections are all set into a unique plug, I unplugged the old and plugged in the new.

Here`s the strange part I keep my caravan in storage so do not have access to mains power however I have a Honda GS 160 5.5Hp generator I connected the mains lead to my geni connected to the caravan started up the geni selected the 230v outlet and went into my caravan to check the stereo was working everything in the van powered up as if it was connected to electric mains however the stereo did not come on I checked all the power switches were on in the van still no joy, I then tried unplugging the new stereo in case it was a fault and tried the old stereo the same thing nothing.

So my question to you is:- WHY? I recognise that the stereo is a 12v system however still cant work out why as the initial set up with the geni powered everything as if I was connected to mains electric hook up.

Hope you can help my brain from thinking anymore look forward to your thoughts.

2 possibilities spring to mind:-

1. Although the plug connecting the stereo looks identical the pin outs may be different for the new model v the old.

2. It may be that the fuse for the 12v feed to the stereo has blown at some point during the installation process.

Generator or mains should be irrelevant as stereo will run of the leisure battery.

Hope that helps - good luck

D

Hi Thanks for your message

I did check the old stereo plugged the connector back from the new upon no display however nothing showed up on the old either.

I also checked the 10amp fuses on both units above the connector and the were not split or broken at all I left it all without tinkering any further as wasnt sure.

Hi only a wild guess I once fitted a stereo to a ford and i was convinced the plug was right in same symptoms as you, good push, in it went all working.

2 Check the fuse on the caravan ,there is also  usually an inline fuse for the radio

Best of luck

other than getting a circuit tester on it on most stereo's there are 2 wires that are bullet connectors a red & yellow try swapping them round as in certain circumstances they can be the wrong way round. one is a switched live & the other being the permanent live. hope this is of help too you.

your caravan may have the same fuse board as mine which says radio on it but the fuse is not blown ..go down each one in turn ..there will be one and renewing that will sort it ..mine was the same ..stock item the fuse board but wrong fuse info ..used 10 amp red fuse to renew ..hope this helps

another possibility is the inverter on the power unit has blown due to the genny firing up when connected to the power supply ..fluctuation can kill it i heard ..always start the genny let it settle and then plug in

I always thought radios, etc were powered from the leisure battery, so check that is fully charged.

The genny may not be giving out a clean sine wave and the charger may not like this. So you may not get an output from the charger to supply the 12v out to the battery (if it is flat) and hence no 12v.

The radio will have iso connectors on the back which are a standard so swapping radios over will not be a problem as they wiring WILL be the same.

Other than that as mentioned previously check the fuses.
