we've just got back from our 2nd camping trip with our 14 month old and whe were away i really fancied a caravan as we had to put the tent down wet and try and entertain my little boy...my oh doesnt fancy towing and buying a caravan would be a big investment (not sure if we would use it that much) so am looking for advice on whether we should stay tent campers or switch to another form of camping.  we have a Monty 6 and do wonder whether a smaller tent with lots of luxuries might improve things..

Reading was difficult but quoting the message and highlighting the text made it readable.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

I don't know whether this will help you but we started off with a trailer tent.  We loved it but there were still a lot of niggly things that we didn't love lol.  Especially the setting up in pouring rain!

So we got a cheapy caravan to see if we'd like that more and we certainly did even though it didn't have a toilet or hot running water.  So our next caravan was a 6 berth with hot running water and a toilet.  We loved her.

I love the extra space that the awning gives us so we always put that up which can take a while but if it is pouring with rain we don't have to rush to get it up.  And we could leave it until the next day if we wanted.

We store our 'van at home so we pack everything into it's place, though a lot of it is washed, aired and put back for next time, then when we get on site all we have to do is put the awning up and put away the heavy stuff.

It takes a few minutes to connect the ehu, put the waste water hog down, fill the aquaroll and turn on the gas.  Our kids are old enough to really help out with this and putting the awning up so it doesn't take us a few minutes.  But one person could do all of that (not the awning) on their own.

Dh does most of the towing but i can tow if he needs me to and its nowhere near as bad as you imagine.

If you were to get a caravan you could easily forego the awning.  We managed with our 2nd caravan without the awning for 7 days.  It's really a luxury item rather than a necessity.  I store everything in the awning that i don't want in the 'van.  And my son prefers to sleep out there.  If you utilise all the storage in the 'van you can live without the awning.
