Just back last week from our summer holiday. We had 11 days at Dingwall and 6 days at Nairn. Had a lovely break and a little bit glad to be going home. We left Nairn, everything was okay. Just coming out of Inverness on the long hill out of it on the A9 the car lost power going up the hill. We eventually made it to the top and stopped in a layby. Set off again and the same thing happened. After stopping for the 3rd time we decided we couldnt chance it getting home by ouselves and decided as the signal on the mobile was good at that point we had better phone for help. We eventually got home about 7.30pm after having dropped the caravan off at the storage at Scone then getting the car home to the house. It was a very long day and we were really glad we had Green Flag, if not goodness knows how much it would have cost us to be towed home.
Havent had it looked at yet, it seemed fine when I took it to work the next day so just ran about in it all week. Began to think it was soemthing to do with towing the caravan but it happened on Friday night again coming back from Edinburgh, and once again this afternoon. Going to book it into the Renault garage at Halbeath for the MOT next week and get them to look at it then. As per usual being a Renault it wont be cheap!
I got my car breakdown which includes the caravan from ASDA who were the most competitive and one of the few who will tow you and the caravan. I had to use them when in Argyll 2 wks ago and in a temper managed to shred the tyre on our caravan trying to get over a kerb . I didn't realise what I had done until we arrived at our site about 10 mins later. being in Argyll between Tarbert and Campbeltown we had to wait a bit longer than normal because of the area but luckily we were not going anywhere anyway and the caravan is a twin axle so caravan wasn't too wobbly. Not until the breakdown man arrived did I discover that greenflag is the agent for ASDA . Not only did he put on the spare but he took away the damaged wheel and hammered it back into shape for me and arranged a repacement spare from their garage a lot cheaper than I could have from a main dealer. so if anyone wants greenflag breakdown, it is cheaper do it through ASDA who would have thought it !
If you are a member of the CC then join Mayday, which is essentially Green Flag. For our Mayday cover we are covered for double journey. This essentially means that if you break down on the way to a site that you have booked, they will tow you to your holiday destination. If the car is not fixed locally to where you are staying they will then tow your car and caravan back home at the end of the holiday. Mayday will also not impose any restrictions on the size of the van they will recover. We have always had excellent service.
We have ours through Direct Line. We used to be in the AA but it was really expensive. I think when towing it is really important to have cover as we found out.
