Is this crazy or do folk actually camp at these times of year?
We dont particularly like this time of year so we were thinking of going away for hogmanay and new years day.
thanks
Just wondered how folks get on with the water in the hog and pump outside if its freezing?

We go most years and it's great, good atmosphere and blows the cobwebs away. You need to use propane gas and lag the water barrel, plus the pipe into the van in case it freezes. Some use an old coat for the former and normal pipe lagging works for the latter.
Otherwise it's pretty much as usual, if a bit colder!!
We were away for the last 2 New Years in 2008 in went down to -9 at night and didn't go above -4 during the day, we put the aquarol on polystyrene 2 inch thick and covered the pump and aquarol with bubble wrap we used a bucket instead of the water hog, the only thing froze was the bucket. Last year it was sub tropical only down to -1 at night.
We are booked to be away in ours for the first time at New Year so keep all this useful info comming, it may well come in very handy. I've changed to propane so the gas is ok although we will have electric hook-up. I will have to get a look underneath to see how much water pipework is exposed. When pipe lagging is fitted Phantom, does it stay on permanently?

I notice you have a tent !? But this is the Caravan forum so..... ? Do you mean 'Camp' or 'Caravan' ? Wouldn't dream of camping. We spent Christmas at Littlehampton CC site last year in the caravan. We were toasty and nothing froze down there.
camping is fine just layer up on the ground first then have an extra sleep bag i use a sleeping pod xl then a mummy inside that and wear a hat to bed we go 1st w/end of the year with the scouts just wrap up warm
We went away in the 'van last new year, it was bright blue clear skies but very cold, we really enjoyed it and are now after a seasonal pitch so we can use it all year round, we seem to get better weather in the winter nowadays and the sites are sooo much quieter, it's great but don't tell everyone.......
We've been away for the New Year several times now, and our last two vans have had inboard tanks, so we've always got some water, even when we don't lag the Aquaroll. However, you lose that smug feeling when you discover that the site water pipes have frozen! The solution is probably to get water from the toilet block, if there is one - but I've known freeze-ups there, too!

No it doesn't, we slit the pipe lagging down it's length so it slots on and off as needed. We haven't needed to lag any pipes on the van itself yet, just the parts between the aquaroll and the van and if on a service pitch the tap and the aqua.
It's a good idea to keep a spare cannister of water in the van if its gets really, really cold!

haha yes i was wondering why everyone was talking about pipe lagging and all that!!! yes i mean camping-in a tent.
i will change to the tent forum
I did in a tent early January couple of years back (-7 at night). Campsite site owner thought we were barmy! Still, by taking my smallest tent and having hook up / fan heater meant we were warm as toast! Of course you do still need to make sure you have loads of warm clothes etc. else life would be pretty miserable in a power cut.
