You don't I don't think. On our Bradcot we have two extra poles that sit in the padded sleeves next to the van but the actual awning isn't attached to anything at the sides.

I have problems with that, as well. I look at other peoples' awnings and they're nice and tight against the van but mine always seems to have a few inches gap, however tight under the van I peg it - and it's always got wrinkles, too.
They are designed to be simply the best fit you can get bearing in mind the oddities of pitches...slopes etc. Best thing is to get that best fit, sit down facing away from the van and open the red...you don't see any gaps then.

You can get two Isabella, (or similar), awning rail stops, which prevents the beading moving along the rail in windy weather. When you have the awning in the correct position, left to right, one will act as a stop for the next time to line it up.
