Do thieves mostly break into the actual caravan before stealing it or do they remove all the security and just hitch it up and go.  The reason I ask is that OH is considering rigging up a board with a remote alarm sensor attached to the house alarm inside the caravan when its on the drive - the sensor used to live in the garage when it was detached but its redundant since we extended and built an internal garage.  Obviously this will only stop them in their tracks if they actually enter the caravan and set off the house alarm - it may go off when caravan moved but its too late by then.  The footage I've seen so far of caravan thefts does indicate that they do normally wrench open the door - the only other thing I can think of is to put tracker stickers on the door window as I imagine they would probably try to immobilise before setting off.  What do you think??

The impression I get is that thieves would grab the van and scarper as quick as pos. Break it open and sort thro the contents at their leisure after having reached a remote location. Therefore would think a motion sensor linked to an alarm in the house is probably the best bet........Mick

Hi Fiona1971,  On the footage i have seen they tend to take off outer security first, but not always, If your sensor can be hidden, say behind a wheel clamp (if radio controled) and if placed in a position that if van is raised to hitch up first,or they try to take off wheel clamp your alarm would be triggered. personally i think you should be able to give them some free electricity.

If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.

Thieves tend to do as little damage as absolutely necessary, unless it it opportunist burglar who just happens to break into your caravan.

A professional caravan thief, and Im afraid these days this is what they are will not be looking to cause damage to your van, very difficult to sell on if the door is hanging off!

People who put tracker stickers onto vehicles are the ones that tend not to have trackers fitted as this is advised against. The thieves are aware of this. It also encourages the thief to hunt for the tracker unit and by doing so could cause unecessary damage to your van.

A tracker is not a deterrent, its a means of recovering your caravan/vehicle if stolen so that you get back what is yours, with any luck the thieves get caught, and your insurance premiums dont go through the roof! If you want a deterrent, get an alarm with flashing lights a loud siren and a doberman.

Once a van is stolen it is usually only driven a short distance away then left, (within 20 miles) just in case it has a tracker fitted, if it has and its activated, and due to the success rate/recovery they certainly dont want to be caught red handed. The vans/vehicles tend to be recovered immediately by the police/recovery units. If it doesnt have a tracker fitted and the vehicle is still there after a few days, then the thieves know there isnt a tracker fitted and off it trots to warmer climes or stripped for parts.

So best advice would be to get a tracker fitted with monitor (movement sensor) for total peace of mind.

Hope that helps

My van had an alarm with PIR's, Leg Sensor, hitchlock, wheelclamp, leg locks, it was outside my house hooked up to the electrics. They tried to steal it - if it wasnt for my next door neighbour having a crafty cigarette they had even tied the caravan to their van as a makeshift hitch. They cut the temporary hitch and drove off causing several thousand £'s of damage. I hate to say it but if they target your van they will get it, but if you attach any alarm which is somehow wired into your house alarm dont use a PIR or internal sensor as they will not go inside untill they are miles away. Even if you fit a trembler type this would be useless if it sets off your house alarm and no-one is at home. I have thought long and hard about the possible ways it could have been avoided and my only answer is to make it as difficult as possible to steal and they will move on to someone else. To this end I measured the hitch lock (BPW type) and made a strong box that fitted over the hitch (welded tubing and checker plate hardened 12mm pin with a lock that cannot be cut off with cutters). If they can get that off they can bloody have it.
