Were with the Camping and Caravan Club insurance.  A lot will depend on where you will be storing it and the security of the site, and the security that you have on the van.  Some insurance companies won't insure you unless your site is very secure.

In that instance the C&CC insurance and the Caravan Club only require two security requirements on the van, that's a hitchlock and a wheelclamp, even if the site is not one of the highly secure sites.

We have made one claim via the insurance for an awning which fell down during a heavy storm and caused damage to the van, and they were quick to respond and didn't try and wriggle out of it.  We took photos of the incident, and they were happy to preceed straightaway.

Lifesure group.

Each year we get quotes from just about everyone and then check their policies just to see what each provides so that we can compare like with like. We find, each year, that this company always provides the most comprehensive cover and at the lowest price.

we're with caravan guard who always seem to get a good write up. Make sure you check what security measures a company require, and weather you meet them. As minimum expect hitch lock and clamp, many also insist on alarms and trackers.

Greetings,

I noticed the other day that the Company with that onnoying psuedo Italian tenor in their adverts is now doing comparisons on Caravan Insurance.

Now when the meecat joins in we can all look forward to cheaper deals on our caravan Insurance. Simples (how do I write that cute 'animal noise???)

Tips...decide just what kind of cover you want for the way in which you will use the van. Check all insurers to compare one with the other to see just what it would cost just to give you what you need.

e.g.  Many do new for old cover if the van is stolen/written off. However, there is a qualification. CC will provide new for old if the van is under three years old. For vans up to five years old the premium is higher. Lifesure just does new for old for caravans up to five years old and their premium is lower than CC. Aviva, mentioned above, does new for old replacement only for vans up to two years old. So if you are getting a new van new for old cover for five years may be your preferred choice. If your van is more than five years old and you went with Lifesure then part of your premium would be for something you don't need, so someone like Aviva may be of benefit if you are already insured with them.

Make sure you work out what your contents are valued at so that they are fully covered.

Check your household insurance as that usually covers personal items taken on holiday.. you don't want to insure them twice (at premium cost) with your van insurance so don't included them in the van's overall valuation.

Cheap cover means less cover so don't just go on price

Check to see if mileage is restricted although how they know how many miles you do in a year is a bit suspect.

If you are not travelling abroad see if they will omit oversees travel to reduce the cost.

Check what the excesses may be

Join the CC it may save you in premium cost with insurers

Go on the CC course as that can save you premium cost

Imagine something goes wrong on holiday...will the policy cover you for any hotel accommodation you may require ?

Will you be letting friends/members of the family use the van? If so will it still be insured.

hi just read your message. we have got a  lunar 500/4 she is 20 yrs old and we had her just over a year. like so many other people that get their first van there are so many insurance companies to choose from and not been uptodate on what was required i went with e& l insurance ( needed insurance quickly to bring the van home to the storage site) they were cheap but i had a query about the policy when it came and it took me over a week to get in touch even though i left no end of messages for them to ring me back. so this year the people where we store our caravan told me to try sheild insurance, the only thing they asked for was a hitchlock and wheel clamp, because of our vans age we only insured the van and awning, i added legal cover and a security for the loss or stolen keys for the house, car and van which is called boomarang. our persononal things are covered through our contents insure for the house. you got a discount for what awared your storage site held and doing the application online. the total cost for a year was £67.25p. there website  is www.shieldyourmotorhome.co.uk or just put in your search engine touring caravan insurance and there will be loads for you to check. hope you get sorted soon.

Hi

We got our first van last Sunday so newbie too. (have tented for years) I ended up with Caravan Guard as it was £140 cheaper than caravan club. New for Old.

I phoned up Caravan Guard this evening as just got the paperwork through and as it specifically listed the security features ( as you weuld expect it to) ie alarm, hitchlock and wheel lock and post on driveway. I suddently clicked that as our alarm wasnt working I'd better phone them to let them know. They were actually very good about it and we have a 28 day 'something' to get it fixed. So we are still covered without the alarm at the moment. I thought it would be a right job and involve extra premiums etc so pleasantly pleased.

By the way OH fixed the alarm 1/2 hour later! Father in law had been playing and messed about with the tilt sensor causing it to set off 4 seconds after switching it on!! - I give it a couple of days to behave before I let Caravan Guard know!
