Just to let you know we are looking to buy a carry a van in the future.(prob next year)

I have read that there seems to be a time when to sell a van.

Well to let you all know I would buy a van when I have got the pennies to buy one,I think that if someone is looking to buy a van  they have a budget and will only spend what they can pay.

So if you want to sell why is this a seasonal.after all you can take a carry a van anywhere all year round is not this the idea of a van?

I have read through this forum that some people go away for Christmas and new year

so if i had the funds now i would buy now.

just my opinion.

I can see your point but it can cost you hundreds of pounds more if you buy in rhe summer. If youre in no rush to buy then hang on til around xmas time.everyones skint and to those caravanners who are thinking of giving up or those who are desperate for money, their caravan is usually the first thing on the transfer list and thats when careful buyers will cash in.

What you do with a caravan is entirely up to the individual who owns it! Just because it can winter tour doesnt mean you have to. So people going skiing over winter or to warmer climates, but at least it gives you the option.

Buying terms - Just to add on from dreadnought.
Also some people do still have money and do still tour all year round - and do like a new van every 1, 2 0r 3+ years. Often vans go up for dale prior to the Big NEC Show. Selling private gets more, hence more buying power at dealers or shows. Bit like cars - theres sometimes in a year when you get the best deal to trade in!

I always imagined there was a "right time" to sell, i.e. the spring, because people who bought a caravan didn't want to wait the 6 months over winter before they used it - and it's not everyone's cup of tea to caravan all year round, especially if it's your first van. Makes sense to me, anyway.

Fact is, you will buy the same secondhand(& I am assuming we are talking about the s/h market)caravan for less in October than March. Prices are driven by market conditions(even if, as in the caravan/motorhome trade there is some attempt to manipulate them)Whatever the sticker price is, if there is less demand the negotiated price will be lower. On ebay if there are less bidders the top bid will be lower.

Whatever the op's opinion, fact is he will get more for his pennies in Oct/Nov/Dec than in Mar/Apr/May. This is why those in no hurry to sell wait until spring & those who need the money sell at the end of season & have to accept a lower price.

The most obvious reasons for some one to sell after the end of the summer season, after all it is the summer months when most people use a caravan, is to avoid paying the storage fees, insurance etc. for the winter or they are buying a new model caravan to use the next year.

The obvious reason for people to buy in the spring is because they have decided to caravan in the summer and need a van "now" - no one wants to buy in autumn or winter and pay storage fees without getting use from it.

So the van you privately buy in November will cost you less than the same van if you bought it in May.

We have our Adria van up for sale now & I hope if someone buys it now then they will make good use of it over the winter months.

The great thing about our Adria is most of it runs off electric, the only two things we have found that need gas are the internal heating (we take a cheap electric fan with themostat) as we pay for EHU & the gas hob so we bought a two burner electric hob as we feel it's a waste to pay for gas if we don't really need it & don't like carrying it.

There's absolutely no reason someone won't be snug & warm over the winter months so I don't see that the season makes any difference to the price.

Stocky - good luck with your hunt, I'm sure you will love every minute of your caravan

Only about 15% maximum of caravanners use their van in the winter, the rest may have one last outing in October for half term but will probably finish and 'winterise ' their caravan during the last week in September, so if you are buying buy during the winter months, if you are selling sell just before the summer.

Of course you can ignore the advice and make people like me happy at buying a bargain now and then selling it for a big fat profit in the spring, having done nothing to it

Or you can hold out for a price you are happy with. We've already paid storage fees & won't get a refund so it's no issue if it sits there till next Easter.

My opionion is if the vans in good nick & the right buyer comes along they will pay a reasonable rate.

After all we aren't trying to fleece anyone so it's already on for a very competitive price!
