The TV will be ok but I cannot imagine the battery lasting long if powering a heating system.

Hi mr p4984,If you have portable generator flat battery should'nt be a problem, if not may have to hook up car to charge battery.

It only powers the fan, but I wouldn't use it.

So if i use my tv & not the blow air i should be ok, I know its like asking how long is a piece of string.
I will use my heating on gas anyway if needed, I was told by my caravan dealer that the new 95amp battery takes over from the old 110amp. I have not got a twin socket on my car, so can not use this facility. WITH THANKS

When I went away for four nights with just my leisure battery (numax 85amp) it was just running out as we came home. I wasn't running a shower or TV though, just the water pump and lights. This was in the small campervan I used to own.

If your heating water for a shower, that will drain the battery quickly as well.

However, it's really not that hard to find alternatives to using a big battery. I find it's the water pump that really uses the power, so I used it to fill the kettle and whilst on, filled a small water container as well, so I didn't have to keep switching on and off. Lights, well, take an alternative (battery operated camping light/windup/torch) just in case, and take a couple of smallish water containers just in case - I always take those 99p spring water bottles from Tesco and the like, which can be reused.

In the van that I own now, I only have the lights wired on the leisure battery.. 65amps and still showing fully charged when I came home after a four night festival. I purposly fitted a hand operated water pump. I also bought a little gismo that fits over the cooker ring and makes it into a heater for taking off the chill.

One thing about it - you'll know how long it lasts once you've used it! Have a lovely time!

ETA: My parents went away for a week in their caravan. They were on EHU, but the pump is permanently 12v, as are the lights, and they both lasted for a week and there was still charge in the leisure battery when they came home.

As you say how long is a piece of string? Depends on so many factors e.g what kind of lights you have...LED or flourescent. All you can do is abide by certain principles and take an amperage chart with you!!!!

Use the Fridge on gas as van fridges operate by using heat at about 9 amps.

Check the amperage of any hair dryer you may take and see if you can find one that operates at about 600 to 1000w (2-3.5 amps).

Roof fan can be anywhere from 0.3 -2.7 depending on the type of fan and the setting. Easier to have the door and window open. Thankfully there is high pressure all around this next week so it should be warmer.

The microwave is about 5 amps but it can be higher when starting up so avoid using that.

Your light amperage runs at around 0.5-1.5 amps on battery; Reading lights 0.8 -1.75amps; wall lights 0.4 - check your caravan handbook

Whale pump and on board pump run at around 2-3amps so don't leave taps running whilst brushing teeth...... and shower together!!!

Boil water on the gas cooker rather than electric.

Check the wattage of all of your appliances and keep a note of just how much you use each hour. 25 Watts per hour should make the battery run for around 38 hours. Nothing should be on whilst asleep so you should be well OK

Phil

Do you have a working 12s on your caravan/car - you could plug in and charge the battery (run the engine ) with your car's alternator for an hour or so each day.

Might be an idea to change the lights you use frequently for LEDs - you get the same output for about a tenth of the wattage & amperage. Apart from the TV the water pump will be the highest drawer of power so beware on showering (maybe an adequate supply of deodorant ).

Forget the 1000w hair drier - that will draw 83 amps on 12v not the 2-3 that Phil has posted

Not sure about the draw on the heating fan possibly lowish draw although I suspect that you won't need the heating anyway.

I understand an hour of TV each day may be ok, I usually find that being on battery makes you more aware of turning off the things you aren't using - e.g. do you need the lights when watching tele?

Good Luck - I'm sure you'll be OK

Thanks for that correction Mr RC. My own chart is clearly b******* and I have corrected my figures.  Checked this am and the wifes’ 12v Hairdryer pulls about 15 amps. Imagine the size of the cable for an 80amp dryer!!!!!

OP If you have an inverter to use standard household appliances that normally run off alternating current check the amperage rating of the appliance and multiply that by 10 for the equivalent DC amperage rating when using your 12v battery. Thus, a 1.5 amp telly (on AC) will draw 15 amps off the Battery. So, for two hours viewing you would use 30 amp hours. Use a 12v telly – ours draws something like 2.6 amps off the battery

You can work out roughly what power you will drain from your battery. If your appliance does not have an amperage rating it will probably have its wattage somewhere. This is the formula

Amps = watts/volts
Volts = watts/amps
Watts = volts x amps

Using the battery you are on 12 volts so divide the watts of the appliance by 12 to give you the amps being drawn.

Using this formula for each appliance you plan on using (don’t forget that AC appliances via inverter need amps x 10) you should be able to have a good guess at the amount of amp hours you will draw from the battery.  E.g. telly for an hour a day, lights for say three hours, pump for an hour a day.

There are other factors that can mess your figures up

1. The actual battery capacity. Yours is new so you should have 95 amp hours unless its one that does not comply with the EU Directive. Nowadays the battery should state the actual amp hours. Before recent regs they just gave a rough idea of amp hours

2. The battery age as capacity decreases with age.

3. The battery type – A sealed wet leisure battery is supposed to last longer.

4. The efficiency of your inverter e.g If your TV uses 24 watts then on 12 volts it draws 2 amps. If the inverter is 75% efficient it will be drawing about 2.5 amps

I have read folks commenting in magazines that their battery keeps them going for a good week not using AC appliances via an inverter or most everything on gas where they can

Phil

Actually it's not really that big now I've used 6mm thin wall cable for battery supply on my caravan and that can handle 50 amps, but I do have a winch on one of my 4x4s wired with 300 amp cable, only thing is under full load the winch will draw 500 amps - kinda crucifies the battery if you let it run like that for too long .

Now you mention inverters and I have seen now a few posts mentioning the use of an inverter to run a standard household fridge from a battery charged by a solar panel and the surplus charge still has to be dumped. Although the cost of solar panels have dropped in recent months they are still high, and I can't see owners of new caravans that change them every 2 or 3 years buying and fitting them (not talking suitcase ones here) as they would never pay. But someone that has a van that they intend keeping, a solar panel could be a good investment especially if you do a lot of rallying or don't use sites with EHU.

Good grief ... Are those places really classed as holiday areas?

Seriously though, modern good quality solar panels only require light to work not direct sunlight so even on a grey day they will still produce a 2-3 amp charge, not enough for the fridge granted but enough for 2 or 3 hours of TV of an evening

Carver heating fans draw just over 1amp at most, on half speed, little more than 0.5amp

Not sure exactly but Truma fan motors will draw more, perhaps 1.5amp on full bore but more adjustable so on really slow speed perhaps only 0.3amp?

The actual 12v control for the heating uses little or nothing.
