I'm gutted. My mum has moved over to Penrith . (we owned the caravan between us). The extra costs of petrol for whoever has to travel along with the inconvenince of living opposite sides of the country means we aren't getting enough use out of the van to justify the storage costs. We had a long discussion and we've decided it's just not practical to keep the van any longer so we're going to to sell. I'm going to get a tent as I do have room to store my camping gear at home but I'll be gutted when she goes I love our little van and me and mum have had some fantastic holidays in her
Sorry to hear that. I assume you feel there's no alternative that would suit you so no point suggesting any - but I guess you've therefore made the right decision. Just have to look forward to the joys of canvas again ! Ok so it has disadvantages, but then most things do, & nothing beats being in tent really does it ?
Happy camping, stay positive.

Just think of that extra money going towards more breaks away :)
On the tents subject hope you don't mind me asking why a tent and not a tt or folding camper etc? I'm not keen on sleeping on an airbed which makes me think that a tt would suit us. Though i'm going to take a look at tents just to be sure. There are some nice looking tents around but i'd want loads of storage space so will need a huge tent lol. Have you already got a tent? Or are you looking for one? I'd love to know how you are getting on if you don't mind sharing with me? :)
Have you thot of buying your mum out, after all she is your mum and might not be in a hurry for the money.Use your petrol costs to help and if you can have it next to your house fine or maybe a farm if one close, just an idea
we're getting a tent rather than a folding camper or trailer tent for storage reasons. I live in quite a rough area and anything stored in the garden will walk, no matter what security I put on it. A tent can be stored in the house. My husband and mum are both disabled so can't help me set up and I found the last trailer tent we had really awkward to put up by myself. My husband is also quite a hefty bloke and the last trailer tent we had he wnt straight through the wooden bed.
I don't have a tent yet but yes I will want a decent sized one. I'm not in a hurry so I can take my time looking over winter until I get something I want.
Mum did offer me the chance to buy her out but by the time I paid her something each month towards the caravan and paid the storage fees there wouldn't be anything left to pay for going away which defeats the purpose of the van. I don't want to hang on to it for the sake of hanging on to it. Vans are meant to be used and I would resent paying all the money out for something that I couldn't afford to use.
I have camped before and think switching to a tent is the most practical decision for us. As I have already said I love the van and have had some fantastic times with her but it's time to let her go now.
There's also a lot of sites where you can store, and then pitch your van, so making it more like a static. But the storage fees and pitch fees might not work out to be that expensive when you consider that you only have to get there in the car, saving petrol. You already have to tow a caravan, and not when stored on-site - so more saved there. And if you already pay for storage, then it may not be much more to store on a site you like instead.
Maybe you've already considered this, but I thought I'd just mention it.
neither of those options are practical for us, Mum can't really drive more than a few miles due to her disabilities, plus she owns the tow car so wherever the van is stored I would have to drive over to penrith, pick up mum and her car then drive to wherever the van is stored.
Siting the van also isn't for us. For me the joy of having a tourer was that we could do just that and tour.
Although we have had fantastic times in the van and I'll be gutted to see her go I know we've made the right decision. Mum is going to buy a static somewhere near to where she lives and I'll be happy touring with my tent.
A few years ago we had to sell our caravan, and although I was sad to see it go it was the right decision.
Circumstances have changed and we now own another, and again I love it and use it a lot. I work in a school and I have only spent 10 days at home this summer holiday.
But in between we had a tent, and although the seasons restricted it's use we still had great times away.
Sad to let your van go but if it's the right decision for you then you will sleep better at night.
Good luck.
