Hi all,

New to the site and looking for some advice from my learnerd caravaners.

We have a 1999 Sterling Emerald. We are having problems with the electrics, the battery charges up when hooked up to the car but is not charging when hooked up at the site. All our 240 works on site, telly etc but things like water pump run slow when we have been away for a few days and we need to replace battery and put ours on my sisters to re charge. We put the heating on when we where away last time and it killed a full new battery in 2 hours.

Anybody here got any ideas of what this problem could be

Hi Darragh,

Thank you for the reply. I dont know if the van charger is working, it forms part of the full electrical unit, pump switch, van / car switch etc. I did take it off and the switch at the back is turned on.

If you have a multimeter check the voltage at the battery terminals whilst it is meant to be on charge from the onboard charger. It ought to read somewhere in the region of 14v. If it's nearer 12v then the onboard charger isn't operating. There's usually an internal fuse on the charging unit - it may have blown.

if your charger is not working the full battery will go flat in a day or two from using lights and pump ect.check for a 10 amp fuse near the charger.if you have a meter a touch the terminals on the battery it will give a reading.when on charge from the EHU and the charger working it will give a reading of 13.5 to 14 volts.a good indication is to turn on a 12v light and plug in the EHU if the light does not go brighter then the charger is not working.

the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

If the battery charger is not working then as a temporary measure to get over the problem of having to take it to another van to charge it you could use an ordinary car battery charger plugged in inside your own van.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
