We have our car insured through the CC and for the Disco we find their rates very competative i.e among the cheapest.
I am confused by your last bit of the sentance 'and is it competative with caravan in tow'. As far as I am aware, whether you tow a caravan or not does not effect your car insurance. You caravan should be insured seperately, but as far as I'm aware, it is not law to insure the caravan. The way I understand it is as follows:
If you are involved in an accident where you are to blame and you are towing, and your caravan is not insured, then the other person can claim off your car insurance. In this case your caravan is not covered, and therefore you will have to bare the cost of repair to the caravan yourself. If it is the other person's fault then you can claim off the other person's insurance for the car, but I suspect you may have to fight for compensation for damage to your caravan - you car insurance company may not fight for you as I suspect they are under no obligation.
If you are involved in an accident where you are to blame and you are towing, and your caravan is insured, the other person will still claim off your car insurance. If your caravan sustains damage, it is covered through your caravan insurance. If it is the other person's fault then you can claim off the other person's insurance for the car, and you leave the caravan insurance company to fight it out with the other person's car insurance - whatever the result, you will be covered by your caravan insurance company who may be able to recover the money from the other person's car insurance.
For peace of mind, I'd make sure that the caravan has it's own seperate insurance. If your caravan was not insured and it became/was detatched from the car and caused damage, then it is conceivable that the car insurance would not be involved. In such a case, the other person's insurance company would presumable take steps to recover any money from you personally to cover any damage to his/her property.
This is the way I think it works, but I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell me if I'm wrong..
