The turbo on my 3.0L diesel auto vehicle drops out at about 50mph and only kicks in again if you accelerate hard. Is this normal on most diesels?

Hope the Insignia works out well - they look good. Remember they've gone back to belt driven cams though - Vauxhall had too many broken chains as a result of their extended oil changes.

And I agree about the Omega - they are great. For such a big car they handled extraordinarily well.

Because of the towing I do, I never go more than 12 months without an annual service and oil change and I always use the top, top grade of engine oil. This usually means around 12,000 miles between oil changes at the most.

The Insignia I am getting is on a 58 plate - one of the first so maybe it still has a timing chain rather than belt.

Blanking off the EGR won't cause the turbo to blow, the biggest cause of turbo failure is lack of oil on shutdown - e.g when you've spent the last hour or two cruising the motorway at 70mph and then pull into a services and switch off the engine. the effect is for the turbo to keep spinning with no oil supply - a reason why you should have and use a turbo timer.

The EGR valve does not cool the temperature of the gasses but the temperature of the burn in the cylinder, this in turn decreases the output power and in turn NOx emmisions

Look - if you're worried about what effect a blocked or blanked off EGR will have on a TD engine then read the article below. If you cool the temp of the burn in the cylinder then you are cooling the gases driving the turbo.

http://www.parkers.co.uk/advice/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14421

Now engine control systems, boost pressures etc vary - so go with what advice is given for specific engines. But the original comment that in general you can ditch the EGR on a petrol but need to be wary doing so in TD seems fair enough.

I've read Parkers thanks and all I can say is that it is very misguided with no points of references.

I'm not worried what may happen when you blank off EGR valves because I know what will happen through working on various applications myself.

Although some people may be interested in the topic, a caravan forum is not really the place to discuss it

Fair comment - this wandered off the OP's original point. All I did was make a comment which I believe to be a valid opinion and which was pertinent to the original post.

I'm not getting into quoting 'references' to justify an honest opinion offered in goodwill. If that's what caravanning is coming to then it's a far cry from how it began.

Good sugestion. I agree that it was going off topic sorry to OP and new topic started, as its our tow car I am concerned about it is very interesting to a caravanning forum.

Many thanks for this. I only got my Insignia last Saturday so it's early days just now but so far it's a revelation. Mine is the SE 160 diesel automatic.

BTW the name is Wildish not Wildfish preceded by Vic(my christian name).

Cheers!

Vic
