How much discount could we expect if we buy a new caravan at the upcoming NEC show? I've heard loads of murmerings, from both dealers and buyers, but I just wondered what ACTUAL experiences people have had.

I'd love to be a good negotiator - at the moment I'm still learning lol - but it would be helpful to know what would be a realistic target to aim for.

Thanks.

What you really want to do at the show is have the telephone numbers for your preferred dealers. Negotiate the best deal you can at the show, then get straight on the phone to the dealers and see what they will do. More often than not, they will match or even beat anything you can get at the show if you tell them you are about to do the deal.

My experience of show "deals" are that they will massage the figures to make it look better than it really is. I was offeresd £2500 for my old van with book price at half of that. At the time, I looked like a great deal, but having since spoken to other dealers, they have said they would do the new van for £2500 less than I was offered at the show, so I get the van for the same price, but get to keep whatever I get for the old one.

Remember the "dealers" at the show are "dealers" all year long. If they can affored to do a good deal at the show, they can afford to do it outside the show... Don't expect them to say that at the show though.

I Went to the show a few years ago hoping to do a deal on a motor mover. I couldn't get a penny off full price. A phone call to Powrtouch got me about £500 off the best price I could get at the show.

The most important thing to remember when negotiating is to know when to walk away.

I agree completely with legs down kettle on, they are still dealers all ther year round. You need to do the best deal for you. I got a brilliant deal last year, but that deal could have been a rubbish one to someone else. I have to agree about the figures too, the deal was just what we'd hoped for (& an extra £250 off squeezed in at the last minute) but when we came to sign it looked completely different to what we agreed they would buy ours for & what we bought for but the final figure was the same. It took a few times going back & asking if they could do anything better but we got there in the end.

It was easier for us to go with a final amount to pay figure in mind & then we knew if the deal would be right for us.

A bit of advice I will give though is......don't let them tell you they'll 'throw' in a starter pack, as our dealer said they actually come with these anyway. Quite a few used this as a final sales pitch, "oh go on then if you do the deal i'll throw in a starter pack".

Good luck & enjoy it, its an exciting day.

As first timers we were offered £1500 off plus start up kit, battery, awning, etc when we told dealer that we were torn between 2 vans (which was true) the other being another make & model we were offered close to £2k - we didn't buy though wrong time for us.

It doesn't matter what the deal 'looks like' on paper - in the end it is the price to swap that matters or if first time the cash you are handing over/borrowing.

My last 3 vans have been bought at the show and the deals have been much better than more local dealers. Having said that we did buy from dealers around an hour away.
