I have just bought a Bessacarr Cameo 440 sle.  It has no paperwork with it and was sold as 1996.  How can I confirm that this is the actual date?

There is a number on the side plate: 17059

Maybe we should have a sub-forum 'Caravan Fetish'.

thanks michael - but I didn't follow your reasoning. How have you deduced from the number I gave that it is actually 1994?

Just checked - Yes the windows are etched and this is the full number:

     SG15440

     BER0017059

I can't relate that to the 'Chris Explained' guidelines and am none the wiser

The WMI code for Carlight is SGC. The next character is either "S" or "T" which denotes either single (S) or twin (T) axle. The next three characters are all zeros on any Carlight Model. The next two characters are the N.C.C. manufacturers codes for Carlight which is CL. The next character shows the model year in accordance with the following VIN code:

Year Code Year Code
1992 N 1997 V
1993 P 1998 W
1994 R 1999 X
1995 S 2000 Y
1996 T 2001 1

the 10 letter in your chassis number is R

if you ring CRIS and pay a fee they will check your caravan details.ie.not stolen or outstanding HP. the one in my book is a BESSACARR CAMEO 440 SLE 1994.if yours is same i can email the page to you.

Thanks Michael,

They told me it was 1996   and they seemed such nice people.

If my van comes up as stolen then the police will descend and take it away won't they?  It's recent history I am pretty sure is kosher but it may have a murky past . . How do I stand should there be something??

sure it will be fine.other than that if stolen you must report it to the police yourself and then make the insurance co. who paid out for it an offer to keep.keep all your paperwork and all names and addresses.lets hope you do not need it.
