A new organisation - the Caravan Safety and Security Group - has been formed to improve, well, I'm sure you can guess!

They have a website - http://www.cssginfo.co.uk/

which aims to be a one stop shop of expert advice to:

  • Safe driving and towing
  • Laws relating to caravans and motorhomes
  • Tips on keeping your vehicle secure
  • The latest security products and services, and much more

It's a joint initiative by The Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (AVCIS), the National Caravan Council (NCC), The Camping and Caravanning Club and The Caravan Club and is something to be welcomed, I reckon.

Thans for that - looks pretty good.  It's now in my favourites.

Just had a quick look but this worried me given the co sponsors of the website.

Towing Mirrors

If a driver cannot obtain a view through the caravan to the rear, then the towing vehicle must be fitted with extension mirrors to both the offside and the nearside

Is that really correct advice or should it have been put a different way. Even when I could see through my caravan I always used towing mirrors as its important to see what is coming around the sides of the caravan!

It does seem rather simplistic compared with other official advice I've seen on this subject, but the website is about safety not simply about complying with the law. The best advice to stay safe is: fit mirrors and use them!

It is a pity there is no section to ask safety and legal questions and get a definative answer 'from an expert' - unless, of course, I didn't spot it.

Could that be because no one wants to get involved in a seemingly gray area - ask a legal or safety question on here for instance and you get hundreds of different replies all of which can be a interpretation of the same law or recommendation.

I think it is to be welcomed but it does seem a bit light on content, hopefully it will grow and more detail and advice will be added.
