I've just booked a weekend away at the beginning of half term..left it very late so very pleased to have got into a great site. Was going to leave the dog in a new kennels as thought would be easier if the weather is not great as we would be able to go to indoor attractions, however unsurprisingly they are full.

I may be able to get the dog into the usual kennels, however was wondering whether if we took her with us whether we could leave her in her crate in the awning if we went off to the onsite restaurant for an hour or two...I wouldn't leave her any longer than that.

Does anyone else do this?

By the way, she does love her crate and is used to being left at home for much longer periods.

Thanks

No, I personally wouldn't leave a dog in a crate for 2 hours at home never mind in a strange place. I'm sure there will be others who would though.

Apart from any possible stress to your dog, there's 2 other things which would concern me about this - 1) an awning isn't very secure so someone could remove the crate complete with your dog. 2) if your dog got bothered & was barking that's a long time for barking to cause a nuisance to other campers - it'll be a lot noisier in a tent/awning than in your caravan.

We have 2 german shepherds and when they come with us..they sleep in the awning in crates...but are only in them if we are there....we wouldnt leave them in there to go off somewhere...I would hate to find out they were barking and makin a nuisance of thermselves and causin a disturbance to other campers...

hmm, it is what I thought, the only thing that made me consider it was last weekend people in the van opposite us went out and left their dog tethered with access to the awning and outside. Perfectly behaved dog and hardly moved!

Now have to make the decision as to whether to try and get her into kennels or take her and risk one of us having to stay behind in the van if the weather is bad

Whether you think it is okay or not to leave your dog/s unattended in either your unit or your awning, on many sites it is against the rules to do so.

I suggest you check with the site as to its ruling on this subject.

Rules on sites have usually come about through past experiences and are not just there to make your holiday difficult.

Most sites don't allow you to leave dogs unattended in your van, let alone in the awning. On one occation that I recall, a dog got out of the awning and was away like a flash. When the owners returned, they couldn't believe their dog would disappear like that. It probably panicked and went in search of them. After a long and worrying couple of hours they were reunited with it and swore that they would take it with them wherever they went. Also, some dogs would bring the roof down if left alone. The owners never know, because the barking ceases when it hears the sound of their engine.

I went away last weekend and booked my dog into a local kennels just for the day so I could go out on my own. It cost me £10 for the day but gave me the freedom and I knew he was OK.

If you go to yell.com and search for kennels near the post code where you'll be staying you can see where they all are on a map.

Why do you not just take him with you in the car, rather than leave your dog on site, thats what we do, we never leave our dogs in kennels anyway.

If we went out for the day of course we would take her with us, I was just wondering about doing something onsite where we couldn't take the dog along.

Unfortunately going out with the family and the dog is not always an enjoyable experience, it isn't how we envisaged it would be, so sometimes we take her and sometimes we put her in kennels. It would probably be easier to take the dog and put the kids in kennels, but unfortunately that isn't an option

That's what I used to do with mine. Even on the site! If I wanted to go for a meal on-site, I would put the dog in the car, drive to park near to the restaurant or cafe (even if it was only 5 mins walk away!) and make sure I could see her thru the cafe window.

I'd find out what the on site policy was, we once stayed at a site that had a restaurant & the owners asked that if you were leaving your dog alone to put your mobile phone number in the window so you could be contacted at all times.

I leave mine in a cage inside the caravan, they are well used to camping and just go asleep while I'm away which is never for very long, I wouldnt leave mine in an awning because I would be afraid someone could possibly steal them or indeed if there were people being noisy near the awning they may bark which would annoy everyone.

We did that last year - went away for a week & put them in local kennels as day guests on 2 days so we could go to a theme park & to visit 'non-doggy' friends.  We dropped them off at 10am & collected them around 5pm both days.

That's what I did with mine a couple of times when I was away in Norfolk, and also went out during my meal to check on them and they were fine.

My mate takes his two dogs away with him, he reckons they enjoy it. How can a dog enjoy spending a weekend away somewhere strange & be tied up the whole time as a bonus. We were on a C&CC rally in Berkshire once & a unit close to us had their dogs shut in a closed in trailer while they went out. They deserved to be slung off site.

We've got fabulous kennels close by & our dog always goes there, he's looked after, never tied up & comes home happy. As a bonus we're free to do as we wish. We've always agreed that we use the one kennel & if they can't take him we don't go.

Ours are definitely part of the family and caravanning is the perfect way to have our dogs with us on holiday.

Ours dogs aren't tied up when we're away unless we are sitting outside with them and we only go to places where they can come with us! Lots of lovely walks! If we go in shops, one of us goes and and the other waits outside with the dogs.
