We've been full circle, tent, tourer, static back to tent again but due to health reasons tenting is not for me so I'm looking to buy a caravan again (hopefully next year) but I just can't make my mind up what layout to go for. First van we had the traditional 5 berth layout with twin dinettes, 2nd van we had 6 berth end bunks and 3rd van we had 6 berth fixed bed (which I loved). We don't need 6 berth anymore as eldest no longer comes and other 2 prefer their pup tents. I've always hankered after an end bathroom as we like 5 van sites with nowt there but then I like a fixed bed. I know there are fixed beds with end bathrooms but the ones in our price range are twin axle and weigh loads so that's a no go. So just wondering what people now prefer - fixed bed or end bathroom and why?

We have the best of both worlds, we wanted fixed bunks as it reduces bed making up and the other bedding goes on it while we are on site, this is how we were using our last caravan leaving the bunks up, but ours also has a side dinette as well as front dinning area so someone can read or play while others watch TV or cook. The other advantage is if arriving somewhere late in the day beds are ready and made up, I wouldn’t want to travel with foldaway beds up as I think it would affect stability.

The size of the bunks matters too ours are a good size, when we re looked at the 6 berth bailey at the time they were quite small and narrow and there wasn’t an area that could be separated off if teenagers need privacy when changing etc

We also have end washroom, though its quite small, it means some one can be in the shower while others are changing in the middle part of the caravan and someone can cook at the front in a morning - it works well for us.

It’s our 3rd caravan and we decided we never again wanted a tip up sink (to many times fishing for lost soap etc), we also didn't want to have to wipe out the shower our get wet feet going to the toilet! We do use our on board facilities quite a lot.

Other things we wanted to avoid was toilet on awning side so you don't have to go thorough the awning when emptying!

Hope that helps - nearly forgot the best piece of advice we had was not to buy a new caravan if its your first, as until you try it you don't know how you will live in it.

If the children that travel with you prefer their pup tents I would condider a 4 berth with side dinette and end bathroom over fixed beds if weight is the issue. If the children want to come in there is still the room.

We currently use this arrangement, like you would like to move up to fixed single beds retaining the end bathroom but for the amount we manage to get away don't think we can justify the cost at present as this layout is quite new.

I'd say fixed bed every time, you spend hours in bed and only a few minutes in the bathroom.

I also like being able to go to bed at whatever time I like & not wait for Hubby & it's also great for an afternoon nap.

We too have tried a few layouts but we are looking to sell existing van.
We had 5 berth with dinette at rear which made up double bed and single bunk above, then rear kitchen with side dinette and rear washroom (quite unusual I believe) and currently end washroom with side dinette which makes into bunks.
DD sleeps in bottom of side dinette bunk, DS has pup tent as he likes his privacy. End washroom with shower cubicle is lovely and spacious and I really enjoy using it. But hubby has had a back operation and really fancies a fixed bed.
Just wondering the best time of year to sell?

This is exactly what I think thats why we went for the fixed bed and smaller shower and loo, with no regrets.
Wouldn't want to go back to moving cusions around to go to bed.
