Just want some advise please, I am away for half term on Saturday for a week and not sure weather to take my full awning or my porch ?

The nights are drawing in quickly and it seems to be getting colder all the time so maybe we should just take the porch, I do have a 2kw fan heater but think it may struggle in my full awning to keep us anyway near warm.

What do you think ?

Cheers !!

Yes I know what you mean but through the day we tend to sit in the awning, and on a night when the kids go to bed we like to have an hour or so finishing off the wine alone !

We take our porch awning this time of year and leave the full awning to the summer breaks of more than 5 days. We find that the porch awning is easier to heat with the fan heater which we have on 24/7 to dry anything that may get wet or damp.

Why when I pay £3 a night for the benefit of having the EHU. The heater is on a thermostat control and it keeps the awning at our desired temperature. Possibly more effective than heating and then cooling only to have to heat it again. thats a waste of fuel?????

We will be taking our porch (probably more a part awning actually)awning.  We all like to be in the awning when we can rather than shut in the caravan all the time when back at pitch - we will be taking 2 halogen heaters, see how one gets on and add the other if needs be.  It warms up pretty quickly so just use the heaters as and when we use the awning.

No wonder the EHU charges are so high on some sites. I'm sorry but this is unbelievable. Do you realise how much fan heaters are to run? I bet you don't use them at home like that.

Well said Jackie! Just because you think you pay for it doesn't mean you have to use it. £3 goes nowhere in electric charges today. Leaving it on constantly would cost a fortune.Very iresponsible and totally selfish.

Perhaps awnings should be banned during the winter then there wouldn't be a temptation to heat them.

Exactly John £3 running a fan heater goes nowhere in fact everyone on site is paying for one to run 24/7.
Now i know why they actually charge for awnings where as i couldn't understand why before.
I've never heated my awning why would i when i have heating in my caravan.
I think all electric heaters should be banned from sites.
I guess this is another reason why some sites are starting metered electric.

Er ok what about tents? As an ex tenter we are always careful about how much electricity we use, we have low wattage kettle & toaster and keep the heater low etc & tend to use the low watt lighting mainly because we prefer it.  But I'm sorry Im not being told that with 2 children with muddy feet and wet coats that I shouldn't be allowed an awning in winter and that I shouldn't be allowed to heat it when either myself or the children are using it because someone else may leave theirs on all day - which I agree is very selfish!!  I actually wouldn't mind being metered as I'd probably save money on the ehu - an 800w halogen when we are in the awning with everything else in the van is off is hardly wasteful.  My kids are young and still like to play together on the floor which you can't exactly do inside the caravan.

If you are planning to use your heater I'd take the full awning, we've also got both & the porch is a lot more draughty because you can't fully seal the sides.

Maybe take hot water bottles that you can fill & put on your lap under a cushion to keep the heat in too?

Like John said Fiona this wasn't aimed at people like you who use electricity responsibly it was more of a shock statement after reading someone runs a fan heater 24/7 because no matter how you look at it that cannnot be justified.
