Just got back from our trip and noticed that the vent cover for the trumaheater has blown off the side of our caravan, not suprising really as it was so windy were we where. So, can you buy them as spares and are they necessary?
Also, when hooking up today and driving off the van was making an awful noise, coming from the A frame. Like a knocking and grinding nose, it was worse when turning corners. How can the van get a noise like this from just sitting there for 5 days, have you any ideas what it could be?
Muck in the pads in the hitch. Maybe needs a clean?
Any half decent caravan shop will sell the cover.

Ifyou mean the cover off the truma water heater ,if you ran it on gasthe build up of flue gases willblow the cover off so I have been told. I don't know if there are spares available but some sort of cover would be preferable to keep out unwanted visitors and contaminants.
It won't run on gas at all with the cover in place - safety cutoff.
The cover will never get blown off by the wind if it's put on properly. Those things are a beggar to get off in the first place. When replacing, ensure the two tabs at the bottom are engaged and then push the top of the cover over the tab at the top of the vent. You should need either really strong fingers or a tool (I use a pair of pliers, others fashion levers from lengths of drainage pipe) to get them off!
As for the cleaning of pads, it's not an easy job. Cleaning of the tow ball is easy, and should be done before towing every time. Wipe the towball with a cloth or, if it has picked up surface rust, clean with a soft scouring pad, and then wipe with a cloth to ensure it's rust, muck and dust-free.

Someone on here recommended spraying brake cleaner up the hitch to clean the pads. They can then be wiped with a lint free cloth without going through the process of talking them out. I've done this. It worked a bit but we still have a bit of a squeak and groan every now and again.
I think you'll always get some creaking and groaning; after all, this is a friction-based system that is resisting movement. What you don't want is crunching or grinding.

I am now thinking that someone has stolen it, because if it hasnt blown off there is now way it has just dropped off. I will have to buy a replacement.
Been to buy a new vent cover today for £12.99, now I know its not expensive but if someone has stolen it then how many times will I have to replace it?
Its just not fair!!
So, excellent idea from Viggo, I'm going to put my Cris number on it and most other things too - thanks for the tip!
