You need to Cris register the caravan in your own name before you sell it. You should have done this when you bought it. If you do Cris register it now you will have to hope the caravan has not been stolen earlier on in its' life.

Google 'hpi' then click on caravans on left of page & go from there.

First of all How old is your caravan?  I think 1992 was the earliest CRIs came into being.  Another indication is this. Do you have any number impressed on your windows?  This is the Vin Number.

Tell the buyer that it is in their own interest to check the registration with CRiS themselves rather than rely on any documentation that you may have or may have lost.

Tell them that you may not have registered it when you bought it.

If they find that it doesn't turn up as stolen neither they or you have anything to worry about.

the problem with CRIS is that when you ring to check they ask you for details of the current owner such as name and address of where the caravan is registered so not sure how they buyers will get on doing that

We just bought van from friend. She didn't register it in her name when she bought it . Previous owner now deceased. rang CRIS who did HPI check which was clear. Told them there was an owner "skipped" . They just wanted to know our name and address as new owner and then they had to write to widow (ouch) of previous owner to confirm they had sold it . Papers arrived a week later in our name.
£14.95 may seem a bit steep, but I would rather have peace of mind and also have paperwork correct if every we want to sell on. If this hadn't been a friend we would have been put off if the seller just said "I didn't bother to register it" we might have been a bit suspicious??!!

I think this might be the downfall or problem with CRiS - many buyers are, or were, unaware of the registration service (it is only voluntary after all) but a lot of credibility has been placed on the service by posters on this and other forums creating the situation that you are finding yourself in.

Apart from the answer I posted above you could tell the buyer that you will get the relevant document for them for a £50 surcharge on the price of the caravan, which I would have thought would be reasonable for the extra work involved.

it is a learning curve really, when we found our first caravan after both taking early retirement 10 years ago i had no knowledge of the ins and outs of caravanning.being connected to the motor industry i had a good general idea of motoring law and weights and lights ect.then it starts,CRIS,service,85% of kerbweight, motor movers,LPG gas, battery charging.and the list goes on.lol.it is worth it though.

Its odd the way a £13k car is registered with the dvla & a £17k caravan isn't. Most countries in Europe register caravans same as cars & caravans have their own numberplate on't back & are also required to be mot'ed.

But of course in't UK we wouldn't want any of this.
