Think of all those lovely country lanes in Cornwall required to reach many camp sites that are a nightmare with a 7' 2" van. Remember as well that by law you have to be able to see down the whole length of each side of the van so your wing mirrors will be at least 8'6" wide.
We've been to a couple of rallies where the entrance was less that 8' wide - I don't like the thought of cutting myself out of a significant number of sites.
Been there done that, no problem - Cornwall that is - in fact I've done many narrow lanes with a trailer wider than 8'without a problem, you have to be prepared to reverse of course - but if you can't reverse you shouldn't be towing ANY caravan!
Not sure what fields you've been in where the gate is less 8' wide because I doubt if many 7'2" caravan owners could access one that size as a lot of vanners need a gap of 2' over the size of their van!
To allow access for farm machinery most farm gateways are a minimum of 10' wide and are very often a lot wider.
What a lot of caravanners fail to acknowledge is that the wider the wheel track of a high vehicle the more stable it becomes so a 8' caravan is more stable than a 7' one and lees likely to have problems on motorway ruts
------------- Caravanning is a way of getting a cheap holiday out of an expensive hobby

agree fully.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

my point exactly thanks for the rude remarks johnks. my mirrors are at least 6 inch each wide so i make that 9 foot wide.so the gate post would need to be 10 foot wide on a straight run.

At 9' wide you'll be able to use the mirrors like cat's whiskers Michael - if they get through the van will - not sure why you need the extra foot though!!

some of the sites have a sharp turn left as you go through the gate or a sharp turn into the gate from the narrow road.i do not have a problem as i used to deliver lorries back to owners from the garage many years ago.only seen one guy open the side of his van on a gate hinge at windermere CClub site, not nice.access has been improved now.

how do you think dustbin lorries .skip lorries and sewage trucks get in to clean up the sites . mirrors can be pulled in ,pushed out. it just takes practice . we also had nice stainless protectors on the mirrors as extra,s to stop them getting broken so easy. life goes on down here even if we do have narrow roads . i also drove milk trucks yes its nice to have wide roads but they arent here and they arent in wales but life still goes on . height is the biggest problem down here . have fun i do .cheers alan.think of the farmers ,combines etc all have to get around.

I personally think it will be like our car and motorcycle industry we will do nothing untill the domestic market is flooded with well built cheaper more reliable vans then it will be to late.
The UK caravan industry has successfully kept European manufacturers out of the market by producing caravans that UK buyers want. If UK buyers wanted German caravans then they would buy them.
I have spoken at length to Dutch caravanners & their stories about faulty, damp caravans are little different from what is posted on here. The vast majority of continental caravan buyers buy 'vans of 2.3mtres wide not 2.5mtres. There is as little demand for 2.5mtre touring caravans on't continent as there is in the UK hence the very small amount of tourers available in 2.5mtre width
If the UK market was going to be 'flooded' with continental imports it would have happened already. The demand for 2.5mtre wide tourers is tiny. To suggest UK caravan manufacturers don't know their market is not correct, if there was demand for wider caravans they would produce them.
