In my opinion, the lightest wheel locking devices are the Alko wheel lock and the Excalibur wheel lock. Both fit into the chamber fitted on the wheel of many (most? all?) modern UK vans. Any wheel lock/clamp is probably more important as a visual deterent for opportunist thieves. The hardened caravan thief can get any lock off and will come prepared to do so. Out of these two, the Excalibur is the cheapest and probably easier to fit. It is also the most visually striking of the two, so this is the one we have gone for.
If you are insured with the Caravan Club, they will generally only specify one security device, so a hitch lock is 'sufficient for their needs'. You will need to check this with your own insurance company (even if the Caravan Club) as it could be a little bit like a lottery postcode situation. What is often more important, from the point of view of security is where you live, where you store your van, and the type and age of your van. We live near a junction of the M42 and therefore quite close to the M1, M6, M6 Toll and A5, therefore it is relatively easy for a caravan thief to get away quickly to any part of the country. We keep our van in a Gold Cassoa storeage site with very strict rules and many, many security devices. If they can overcome all the security on the site, then they ain't going to have any trouble getting my hitch lock and wheel lock off. For me, the hitch lock and wheel lock come into their (limited) own when the van is not in storeage, although when you are on a site and have your awning up with thing out in the awning, this must be a deterrent within itself. If it takes the thief half as long to pack all the stuff away in the van and take down the awning as it does me, then they would surely be rumbled before too long.
