A friend of mine suggested that I wouldn't need special caravan insurance for our 1990 'van as our house insurance would probably cover most of it. Our 'van isn't worth an awful lot but when you add everything up, it's quite alot of money that we couldn't afford to just write off to experience if something untoward happened.

Just as a matter of interest what do you think?

for peace of mind and safety,go for insurance.

add up all the accesrys,ie- awning, etc.plus waht you feel is a reasonable figure the van is worth, check with companys as to the cost of insurance.

better to be safe than sorry.

Insurance is a good idea, it will cover you for damage to other people and property if, for example the van should run-away on a site while unhitched.

What may be covered by your house contents insurance are your clothes, bedding, TV etc while in the van, if you have all risks cover away from home.

This would not cover the van itself, awning, gas bottles, water carriers etc.

With the CC you can take a policy without the contents cover if your house contents cover already covers them.

If you feel your caravan is covered under your household insurance policy then I would ring them to make sure.  I would have thought that you need to check to make sure it was covered: wherever the van is kept (at home, parked on the road, at storeage, while being towed, on site occupied/not occupied) and how this relates to any security device you may have; would it be covered for fire, theft, damage by you, damage by a third party; check to make sure that a third party would be covered if the caravan caused damage to other property/person irrespective where the caravan was at the time (parked, being towed, in the process of being unhitched) etc.  Contents cover is another issue - check which items you are covered for.

To be honest, I would take out a seperate Caravan insurance with the Caravan Club.  They are the largest Caravan insurers in the UK and treat claims very fairly and sympathetically - I have had to make a claim and they were very good.  They are not the cheapest but are good at providing the caravanner with the sort of insurance suitable for the members caravan, and they do have "over 38 years' experience of providing touring caravan insurance, and any surplus income generated from the scheme goes to enhance Club sites and other caravanning-related services".

Just renewing mine this morning on our 1994 van, only the second time of doing so, we didn't have insurance for a while as we thought it's only old but if it got nicked or went up in flames we would be without a van and no money to replace.

I compared quite a few different companies and have ended up back with the Camping and Caravanning Clubs insurance called Clubcare, £77.

We're not members either, the saving of a couple of quid didn't warrant the joining fee of £37!

SUPERBIRD - like your pic of your van looks a nice littleun!

We were told by caravan club to check if contents of caravan is covered by house insurance, first person I spoke to said it was, luckily there was something that made me want to ask a different advisor and it turned out that contents wasn’t covered by house insurance – CIS.

from experience if your caravan was to do damage to another expensive caravan or car and or cause property damage that's the day you will wish you were insured.if the caravan is on the rear of your car and you are towing the damage is covered by your car insurance.the rear of my van caught a car wing slightly when turning left at a T junction into our street traveling at less than 5 mph.no damage to the caravan but the new wing cost £1000 to replace the wing.that was 10 years ago so cost will be much higher now.the car insurance would pay for the damage but do i not think they would pay for your caravan repairing.

Thanks for all your replies.

Reading all the posts made me look at it in a different way. It's very easy to think in more obvious terms (equipment outside being stolen, accident while towing etc.) but serious damage to people/pets/property while unhitched that's a different matter

I have insured our caravan with The Camping and Caravanning Club for £58 (saved £7 & better cover than last year) and emailed my friend, his reply was "I never thought of that........"
