Following a warning on another caravanning website about the danger of bottles freezing, bursting and then making a mess when thawing I've just been out to my 'van, which is stored on our drive to check.

We had a number of bottles of drink stored in the floor level cupboard under the oven. A 2 litre plastic bottle of ginger beer was completely frozen and there were several partially frozen ones. In another cupboard a plastic tub of cooking oil was frozen solid. I, also, removed the plastic bottles of cleaning fluids from the cupboard under the bathroom basin as a number of those were partially frozen too.

I had carefully winterised the 'van including draining the water system but I had not thought of the problem of freezing bottles.

It might be worth it for others to check if you've got bottles of liquids stored in your 'van.

Best wishes
Tim

Whoops! Thanks for that Andcow.

I haven't removed the bottles of toilet fluids from the front locker yet. It looks like I'd better go back to the 'van as they're probably even more exposed to the low temperatures than the bottles inside the 'van as the front locker cover is only thin and has "drop out" slots in the floor. A bit of a pain as the Protec cover is in place.

If we're going to have winters like this one in future I think "bottle removing" had better go on the "winterising list".

Thanks for the warning....we usually go out in the van most weekends, but both our December jaunts were cancelled, but are planning to go out for new year. Decided we had better check things before we go to Stockton on Tees C.C. and just as well. Our van is stored in a big shed/hangar so is a bit warmer than outside but still stuff had frozen inside the van lockers. In the fridge was a big brown slushy ice crystal mess where a tin of coke had burst open. The shower shine spray stuff was frozen. The toilet was frozen so the blade is stuck shut. At least I was able to clean up a bit so it will not be a shock when we want to set off.

Thanks for the reminder, we was careful to make sure all the water was drained etc, after reading your post we today went to the van to remove all the toiletries and pink/blue toilet chemical, we found all still frozen, including furniture polish, the toilet chemical containers looked like they were ready to explode, so all now safely out of harms way on our garage floor , Thanks Again

Hi

I "bit the bullet" of retrieving the bottles of toilet fluids from the 'vans front locker on 23 December. I managed to ease up the front of Protec cover enough to open the front locker but then Cary and I had to crawl around in the snow re-securing the cover straps we had had to undo - lovely!!!

The green fluid (pink equivelant purchased in Croatia) was frozen solid. The Campbells Caravans "Blue" and Thetford Wastemaster liquid were still liquid.

Anyway job's fully done now!!! Next winter I'll remember to take out the bottles when I winterise the 'van.

Tim
