Hi all i have recently bought another 1st caravan after years of building my way up to a new one a couple of years ago ! The only thing i am struggling with is the gas hob ! now the caravan is quite old but does have double glazing , however when i light the hob it does light but then explodes and blows itself out !
Any ideas why ????

Many thanx

Are you trying to use Butane gas, ie blue bottle in this cold weather? If so, you need propane in red bottle.

Sounds like air in the pipe.

If you want to use the cooker in winter you need to use propane. The butane ain't working because its too cold. If you want it to work on butane you need to wait until the weather is warmer.

If you just want to try it, out bring the bottle indoors overnight then take it out to the caravan & try it straight away.

Just a bit wary of the last bit of advice from Tentz... whilst you would probably be ok, gas should never be stored inside. If there is any leakage from the bottle, there is no way for it to disperse, therefore risking an explosion! This is why gas lockers on caravans have openings in the bottom to let the gas get away in the event of a leak!

It's possibly (& I stress only possibly) a jetting problem that's allowing air to mix underneath the gas ring & allowing it to ignite there, as opposed to igniting after it has exited the holes in the burner cap  itself.

I'd try cleaning the jet & make sure there's no damage to the burner ring / obstructions etc.

Some good pointers on this thread, but I think that there is also another aspect that merits consideration. As this van is new to you I wonder if it came with a test certificate for the gas equipment in the van. Ideally the gas systems should be checked at least every three years by a competant gas engineer. That engineer will check for, at least....

  • A check for gas leaks and condition of pipework and hoses
  • Ventilation check (air inlets are clear and adequate)
  • Flue check (smoke spillage test)
  • Checking safety devices are work correctly
  • Appliances are safe to use

As you say that the gas "explodes", that would give me cause for concern on a safety level.

If there is no current gas test/inspection certificate it would be beneficial to have the system checked, and, perhaps, before just checking the cooker by turning the gas on! A gas safety check should cost no more than about £50.

Also, just check with your insurance policy to see whether it is conditional upon such  test certificates being required every so many years. If so, and you don't have one then you may not be insured.

Phil

If it is so dangerous to store butane gas inside how come we have a gas stove and no problem? We have no town gas natural or otherwise only bottles. In many homes the bottles are in a cupboard next to the stove. Should we be worried?
