We have just returned from our New Year trip. Whilst tidying up the van I drained the water heater but forgot to turn it off at the wall. It was probably on for about 1/2 hour without any water in it.
I seem to remember that there is some kind of safety cut off which protects the heater when no water is present. Am I right or am I going to have problems when I next use the van in the spring?
Not sure what model heater I have. The van is an Elddis 2006. It was being used on electric. Thanks for your help.
Yes , you should be ok , I've done it a couple of times on electric with no damage . There is a safety cut out can't remember how long i had to leave it before it would reset probably 1 hour ?
If the water heater is inadvertently operated empty the caravan will trip out. To reset, turn off 5 and 10 amp trips, turn off RCD consumer unit, then fill with water and turn 5 amp trip back on.
This would apply if the system were incorrectly used while on site as obviously the lack of EHU while in transit or in storage would amount to doing the same thing as above.
Simply, with Truma heaters you need to totally disconnect the mains supply to the heater, this may mean as Truma are saying at the fuse box and not just at it's control switch.
Of course if the vans un-hooked from the mains, it will make doubly sure!
Main thing is to not be in a hurry to switch back on, the device has an internal element to keep it hot and switched off once tripped. Only when mains is disconnected can it cool down, so if you switch back on before it has chance to cool enough to reset, then it instantly reheats the internal element, you then need to start all over again and waiting the original time plus some more!!
That info is good news, its nice to hear that the element isn't burned out if you inadvertantly forget one time. They are about £70 quid each and a pig to fit I have heard.
HI nands, would'nt wory too much, did same with my heater when no water in it,mine is carver the tube kind that is built into van from outside and sits under the bed, had it all drained down and EHU to charge battery.was storeing things away when foot hit the on switch on the front of the bed and heater came on,did'nt see it for good 10min,then switched it off and reset the cut out button, used it when on site and all was fine, the switch has now been moved to worktop level.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.
tripped mine a dozen or so times before I figured out the inlet valve was playing up! (hot water slowly drained back, leaving the element to overheat if I was out for more than 4 hrs.
