Hi, the hot water is fine when heated with the gas and was also when heated on the electric, in fact it gets really hot, however last October whilst away and on ehu, we had a electric blow heater trip the elctric and OH had to reset it in the wardrobe a few times, the water then seemed to take ages to get hot when heated on the electric.
Haven't been away in the van since so don't know if things will be the same when we use in the spring.
Any ideas if permanant damage has been done?

gas is much quicker heating the water, it will get to 70 degs and turn off and on as required.if in a hurry for a shower you can use both at the same time.

Just wonder if you are starting the electric heater before the tank is properly full. We used to and it was never right. Trial and error but this is what we do in our Elddis. Start filling the water tank and shortly after it starts filling open the cold water taps which ensures the tank fills. Then open the hot and that gets more air out of the system and then leave it about 5 mins (after the pump stops drawing out of your water hog and all air is out of your pipes) before putting the electric heater on. Water is always hot and stays hot on just electric heating.

Thanks both for your replies, will have to wait for the spring before we can tell how its working, although it will be June before we're on a site with electric, so will be on gas for a while anyway.
Although the water did get hot, it seemed to take longer to get hot after the electrics tripped so thought we may of done some damage.

Without looking at the manual which is in the caravan in storage I can't tell what the make of the water heater is, however the caravan is a 1994 Elddis Gulfstream GT if that helps, will get back after next visit to site.
Thanks

Generally speaking electric water elements either work or they dont. They can become less eficient with limescale build up but unless you have done a huge ammount of staying in very hard water areas that should not be a problem. You say the water does heat up, so it does not sound like the thermostat. It could be the supply--CC siites mostly have 16 amps on their hook ups, but not all others do. On some sites, the more people using electric the lower the power available and the slower your heatup will be. Can you try the water heater at home?

Unfortunately can't try the water out now as van on storage site, will have to wait till we're on a site with electric next, probably won't be till end of May as a lot of our camping is wild.
Did have the van at home for the first year of owning it but our drive is so steep getting on and off, plus the pain of our neighbours and their cars make it too awkward, so easier to store it.

I agree with Brianjose, there several factors which will affect the time, the initial water temperature is one,the supply voltage is another. If a lot of people are using the supply then the volts can drop quite considerably.
A 240 volt rated 1 kw heater will use app 4.17 Amps at 240 volts, the same 1Kw heater will use app 3.81 Amps producing only app 840 watts at 220 volts.
I have frequently encountered voltages as low as 200 volts in France.

So hopefully we have nothing too much to worry about, anyway as I said we wild camp so obviuosly on gas then and it did warm up, will get back to you later in the year and let you know how it's working.
Thanks for your input guys.
