We are going to look at this at the weekend. It is exactly the layout we have been looking for and is also, more importantly, a class leading headroom of 1.99m which will hopefully mean that my extra tall OH can stand up in the van!

However, we have some doubts and concerns that maybe some of you can help us with.

It is not NCC approved although it is fully UK compliant, i.e. fire retardent cushions, UK plugs etc. Should we be concerned that it is not NCC approved?

It will not automatically be CRIS registered. I believe that we can do this ourselves with a kit from CRIS. Has anyone done this?

It is not an established make. The Italian company's history is in motorhomes and has only recently diversified into caravans. There is only 1 UK importer. What happens if they decide to stop importing to the UK. Will our warranty still stand or become void? Are caravan parts the same for foreign and UK vans, e.g. thetford or truma?

We realise that resale values tend to be lower for an imported van. Do you think we would really struggle to sell in the future? I am concerned that the vans may not take off in the UK and they only end up being imported for a couple of years. We intend keeping the van for 10 years but circumstances change and we may need to sell at some point in the future.

Sorry to ask for so much help. We will be making a 500+ mile round trip to view the van so want to make sure it is worth our while.

I would appreciate any advice anyone has to offer!

Hi im afraid i cant advise as i am pretty much in the same situation, although i have the same concerns regarding buying a european van, even though that the one youve linked to would be the ideal van for us too. Best of luck and i hope you get the help you need from other members .

Hi staticupvcglazing,

I read your thread but didn't link to the van we are looking at as you are looking for a UK van. Good luck with your search!

We had a cristall van.  The company went into administration and I presume any warranties went down the pan.  We were going to keep it for many years but when we were just having a look around the NEC show we saw a van we liked.  The part-exchange we were offered persuaded us to change van.  The fact it was an imported van didn't seem to affect its value much.

I notice one of their new vans comes with a satellite dome as standard and some of their vans make use of the new law allowing wider vans.

That's reassuring Brian thank you! Can I ask where you found the info on the satellite dome? I've not seen that anywhere. Thanks!

Don't worry about CRIS - you can contact them direct with all your details and proof that you own the van and they will send you the kit & etching equipment & instructions to do it, once completed you send the required bits back to them and your van is CRIS registered!

Obviously you have to pay for it but its easy to do - we did it on our Burstner when we bought it new as that didn't come with it.

As to resale value - we are selling ours and the main reason people aren't keen is that the door is on the "wrong side"- well in the UK it has never caused us an problems and of course in Europe it is fantastic.
We are obviously biased as its our van but I do think there is a lot of scaremongering that goes on in the British Caravan world regarding Continental vans - to our mind the build quality & layouts are far superior to the British anyday - but hey - horses for courses & all that.
Good luck with your search - Crystall do seem to be doing well in Europe but will obviously have to overcome the UK biase to do well here :(

Rimor is a well known brand & I'm sure there will be no problem with build quailty. Importers of European caravan brands apart from those well established in the the UK like Hymer & Hobby seem to come & go tho.

Spares would be no problem as cooker, fridge etc will be the normal makes & even if you required body panels after accident damage I'm sure these could be sourced without too much trouble.

I think resale value after say, only 2-3yrs would be poor tho. This is not a 'UK style' caravan.

Thanks Petrolhead. We actually contacted you via email about your van. If the headroom is no good in the Rimor we might contact you again! The layout of the 2 vans is virtually identical - the washroom is in a different place.

The thing to do about resale is do a search for a similar van to yours, as if you were looking to buy and see how much they are going for compared to a similar age and spec Bailey, for example. You'll always find someone who likes the layout but it's how much of a hit you'd have to take (may be none at all!).

We've got a Geist who have stopped making caravans (although they still make motorhomes) but they're part of LMC, so spares shouldn't be a problem and it is UK spec...

You are very welcome nands!
Most of the continental vans are very similar but as I mentioned us Brits seem to have an issue with what side the door is on!
We do love our van and planned on keeping it for 10 yrs but I have changed jobs and now only work Term Time so want to be able to go away with our children whilst my Husband is at work in school hols, BUT even after doing a towing course I am such a girl at towing which scares me silly ( tail wagging dog & all that) that we decided that we need to swap to a Motorhome so I can make the most of the hols as with small kids it would also be tricky setting up on site on my own with a caravan.
Good luck with the Rimor, we actually looked at them but they didn't do the layout when we bought ours. Burstner was at the time the only company who did a UK spec van in that layout as all others were too wide for the UK but obviously the law has now changed so the market has opened up for other manufacturers.

Good luck whatever you decide.

In the new caravan club magazine there is a show report section where it states that all Rimor Polaris 2011 caravans will have the Maxview Vudome fitted as standard.

Thanks for all the replies. We are off to view it tomorrow and will have more of an idea if it is the caravan for us then. Are there any questions we should be asking the dealer?

We bought a foreign van from new. As has been said before, the door may be on the 'wrong side': not a problem for us in 8 years of site visits. All of the fixtures and fittings are proprietary so all readily serviced and parts obtained. Most 'foreign' vans may have a weird name but are part of a much bigger group so body spares aren't really a problem (especially when I hear of the lead times from British manufacturers), ours was part of Knaus.
I think the thing is to hammer the dealer on the purchase price from new and any part-ex you may have. That's what we did and in effect took away the likely first 3 years of depreciation at a stroke!! We bought between Christmas and New Year when the dealer was sat on his own looking cold and lonely, we knew what we wanted and what we wanted to pay for it and to my surprise we got it.
Good Luck!
Pete.

Nothing wrong with getting price down as low as possible, but this illustrates how importers of European caravans come & go. A marque is imported in a small way & the importer does not go the distance. Knaus actually did import UK side door 'vans for a couple of yrs but obviously did not get sufficient sales to make it worthwhile.

Plenty of Brits go to Germany to buy & take advantage of discounts offered by large dealers that any small UK importer cannot compete with. My guess is that the Rimor importer will go the same way in a couple of yrs.

No European maker has yet decided it is worth setting up an extensive dealer network to compete directly with the likes of Swift & Bailey & of course there is a reason for this.

European 'vans are a niche market in the UK. If Brit buyers wanted the more avant garde styling & somewhat different interior layouts of imported 'vans, then there would be dealer networks to supply that demand.

Whether European 'vans are 'better' that UK built 'vans is neither here nor there. Fact is as regarding ease of purchase/service/warranty of a new 'van it is at the moment far easier to 'buy British'.

This is probably true which also applies in reverse so that few british vans are sold abroad.

Well we bought it. OH could stand up in van no problem at all. The beds are all a really good size including the bunks so the van will last us many years. The compromise was with the kitchen worktop space and the size of the dinette. However, we decided that we could live with these as the rest of the van is perfect! Got an excellent price for our existing van - we have only lost 1k on it over the 2 1/2 years we have owned it!

We also arranged to have some extras fitted and the dealer threw in a Avtex tv dvd combo as ours is too large.

In the end we felt that the price to change was fair and decided to go for it. Just have to wait until March before we can get our hands on it. Can't wait!
