hi we have just had our 10 year olc elddis firesstorm serviced,the damp report showed the front nearside had 60percent damp wallboard rotten about as high as the bed,the back nearside is the same with 50percent,theoffside is 40 at the front and 38 the back,we dont really understand how bad this is,a bit of resealing has been done and a bit of rotten wood under the van replaced,we want to know if there is a chance it could dry out with a heater in and the readings might come down by spring,we have to take it back to the repairers then to see what else can be done.we only bought it this year it is our first van and we paid 4750 pounds for it we are gutted,please help

We use the tester shown, which allows us to monitor the onset of damp and catch it at the optimum moment.
Readings between (0-15%) no cause for concern
Readings between (15-20%) dealer to make a note of these readings and re-check at next service.
Readings between (20-24%) possible early signs of ingress, look for tangible evidence or ask for a re-check.
Readings between (25-30%) moisture evident, remedial work required; may not need stripdown unless surface damage (staining, pimpling, and softness) is apparent. (There is a risk of wallboard deterioration due to retained moisture in the structure if resealed only.)
Reading (31 % and above) structural damage is occurring, deterioration inevitable. a full stripdown of the affected area is required.

Just out of interest did you buy it from a dealer or privately and when was it actually purchased? What was said about the condition of the van when you bought it? Just that you may possibly have some legal redress to get it remedied by the seller...depending upon the facts surrounding your purchase.

hi phil,we bought it 31jan last year(keep forgetting we are in a new year)privatley from a couple who had only had it 6 months,they had previously bought it from the dealers glossops.when we phoned to tell them of theproblems they denied knowing anything about it,and said it had been damp checked and serviced by glossops,we being novices thought the pre handover report was as good as aservice,and didnt know the damp report should have been a written separate report,we feel so upset and feel there should be laws about selling damp vans,especially if like in our case structural damage could be likley and therefore the caravan might not be safe
Hopefully this was not one of those caravans involved in the floods of 2007. It may cost you slightly less than £20 but a HPI check will flag up if the caravan was written off.
You can then claim from the private seller who in turn can claim rom Glossops. It is worth a shot at this point and may save you hundreds in repair bills although you may have a long battle. if it was written off there si no ways glossops woudl want to go to court over this.
I also suspect the private seller found out about the damp hence the sale after 6 months.
Regarding your first post and heating. Can you push yoru fingers into the woodwork underneath? Ours was put into a workshop for a week with a heater and dehumidifier running in it full time 24/7.
It dropped down the damp reading considerable from about 55% to an acceptable level. The initial damp reading was done in late November 2010.
Try this first as it may not be all gloom and doom!
the back corners are spongy at one point not a vast area, the front corner with the highest reading feels solid and no rippling of the vynil wall covering,there is no smell we have got plug in moisture traps in there and a radiator at the moment,the caravan is cris registered does that not include hpi check
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but being CRIS registered has nothing to do with an HPI check which works very similar to a car and checks if there are any insurance claims, outstanding finance, if it has been written off or stolen.
You would need the chassis number and CRIS number to get it HPI'd.
Did you not get a copy of a recent damp test when you bought the caravan? For future purchase you can buy damp meters from B & Q and do it yourself.
CRIS & HPI check are totally different. I have only suggested the HPi check as it it may throw up something which might help you. On the other hand it might not. I think the cost is just under £20.
It is up to you to decide. If you go ahead let us know the result and may be Phil or myself can advise further.
As we said previously we were not aware the damp test was separate from the service and trusted what we were being told,the caravan looked fine and we didnt know what to look for,we would have thought damp would have to be mentioned on the service report,dont worry we have learnt a painful lesson,we wont try and sell it on as unlike alot of others have got morals,even some dealers cannot be trusted,we will pay for i hpi check
just phoned cris and they said we wouldnt have been able to cris register it if had been written off or been in an accident,so advised us hpi check wouldnt help
One problem with trying to dry out a damp area on a caravan is that the damp is sealed in. Aluminium skin one side, Vinyl covered ply the other side.
To aid drying, try piercing the vinyl covering with a pin, then warm the area with a fan heater. If it dries out ok you can wipe over the pin holes with PVA adhesive which is waterproof and transparent when dry.
This is assuming that the external leak is cured and you haven't got a permanent stream entering through an awning rail or other fitting!

just been reading thro your post,similar to our problem with our knightsbridge!!
discovered that the sealing on roof either side at the awning rail towrads the front slope and across on top panel over front windows has been letting in water,result that the frame across the top and sides of front windows will have to be replaced and also lower frame under windows and inside panels and shelf need same.
dealer costings (white arches,elddis main dealer) bteween £800- £1100 for completely stripping down and rebuilding.
needless to say not able to do it yet,stored under cover at mo,until can afford to have done,had been using fan heater on low setting inside to dry her out a bit,some success,but will have to be redone tho.
Can't offer any advice but just wanted to say I'm really sorry this has happened to you. It's a rotten, horrible lesson to have to learn the hard way.
We knew about as much as you did when we bought our 1st 10 year old & could just as easily have ended up in the same position. Thankfully, we dropped on a good one but you won't be the 1st, or last to have this kind of thing happen. Not much comfort to you, I know.
Really hope the van dries out & turns out not to be as bad as you think. Good luck with it.
