Maybe start by joining the Caravan Club (£42 p.a.) & booking into a certificated location site (CL). There are 8 listed in their sites directory, for Herts. Prices are at around £10 per night or less.  You will need electric hook up for a long stay, but that is normally included in the price. The maximum length of stay is 28 consecutive nights, so you would have to move on to another site after that. The sites are often on working farms, privately owned, in rural surroundings and 5 units is the maximum they are allowed. You book directly with the owner so you have the opportunity of explaining your situation.At this time of year, they may be pleased with the income so you may be able to get a bit of a discount.

Something that you must be aware of though, is you must use Propane Gas in the winter, as Butane will not gas at below 4Degrees C.

other privately run sites will not have the 28 day restriction but may cost more. Their licence will have a maximum stay period but this may be up to 11 months. costs can be negotiated but may not make huge savings over renting a flat.

As for actually living in a caravan - no problem.

Maybe, if there are no ties in Hertfordshire, you could see this as a golden opportunity to tour the country looking at different areas and houses to live in for the rest of your retirement. No has that got you thinking out of the box?

All of the above advice just about sums up all you need to know. if you are using the limited stay sites its about planning well ahead, or just use two sites and alternate. You will need to book well in advance to make sure of a pitch.

I have been getting mixed reactions from family & friends about my caravanning idea, but I reallly am getting the impression that it would be a good solution to our problems.  I think renting a static caravan would be the best option, just need to find some sites to go and look at I think.
