I have just been reading some old posts about winterising caravans as we are new at this.
I wasn't sure about leaving food but gleaned that leaving tins is ok.
However, when we checked our van recently, there were puddles of condensation on top of each tin and some had gone quite rusty. I opened some and the tin of rice pudding looked inedible! I guess the temperatures have been so low that the food inside had frozen then defrosted!! I thought tinned food was relatively safe so thought I would post this just in case some of you were planning to set up and were looking forward to your Fray Bentos Pie, New Potates, mushy peas and rice pudding without a need for a trip to the local store!!
That level of damp needs addressing! You may have a problem--check it out! At the very least get a couple of chemical de-hunidifyers in there and leave all the cupboard doors open.

Yes thanks for tip. It is a new-ish van just had service October and that was the worst cupboard (under the sink) We have checked for leaks etc. We didn't leave anything to absorb the damp so we have left loads of old curry dishes about with salt in them to see if that helps and left some of the doors open for circulation of air.
There seems to be two opposing views about leaving doors open. Yes for air circulation. No for warping of doors. We have don 50/50 to hedge our bets
hi flip whenever we put our van away for the winter we always took out everthing metallic that we had put in ,it always condensates even in dry vans we also opened all lockers to prevent cold spots
------------- if it aint broke ...keep fixing it until it is !

I tend to store some food stuffs eg coffee and a few tins in the van over winter and ended up throwing a everything out just too be safe. However i did leave quilts and pillows this year. Even with all the sub zero temps, everything seems fine but the battery is flat so Ive already got the van hooked up to the mains and now have the heating on and the seats up and doors open to ensure that the heat circulates. Cold weather will be back soon im sure but for now I know that everything is ok ... Ive even managed to avoid blowing a few taps this year because I finally learned how to empty the water pipes properly lol
we put all our bedding in vac bags .....we get them from wilkinson s stores [ jml do them ] saves space, keeps damp out .......[.im not on commision ] theyre simple to use and they work , we also use them in our roofbox on the car when we go camping

I have used these quite a lot and even bought the more expensive ones but still the air gets in and the vacuum fails and I end up with just stuff in a bag.
seemed such a good idea to space save just wish it worked???
Our caravans is in a spot where it is mainly shaded from any sun (fat chance I know) & also we put the blinds down on the 1 day a year when sun occurs - I think that helps. (though I know lots of people can't pick & choose)

I must check tins now although i did check and they are not rusty but however i did wonder obut the contents!! when we went to the van in the big freeze it did amuse me to find the dettox spray solid!!!
------------- Oh am loving the tin tent after campaining against it..........I was wrong.
Yes Michael I did wonder about that. I am often accused of being too fussy!
I wondered if the canning process protected the food even from freezing and bacteria?
Possibly not.
And I thought they were safe in my nuclear air raid shelter too but if they can't even stand a bit of British Winter well.................!
IMO, it would be fine, the tinned food is preserved anyway, so bacteria content is minimal. The whole freeze/re-freeze is when it defrosts it allows bacteria to grow, when re-frozen the baceteria go dormant, but they are still in larger numbers than before.
We were very lucky last week when we went to check out van afetr cold spell. When we opened up cupboards to find a number of pop cans had expanded to a strange shape and fractured and after thawing out spilling contents into base of units .What a sticky mess but we were lucky as i only two cans punctured just as well for there was another dozen or so just about to follow suit.Oh also a bottle of vinegar did the same and i assume it vapourised as there was no sign of contents anywhere.
