No doubt someone will recommend a route but have you tried RAC Routeplanner? If you click for fastest route as opposed to shortest it should keep you on the A roads

Google Maps suggests a couple of interesting "scenic" routes and a third one which is mainly motorway, which I imagine you'd prefer when towing.

If you choose this M6/M5/M4 option I'd suggest you'd "cut the corner" by leaving the M5 at Strensham and taking the M50/A40/A449 to join the M4, avoiding the (westbound) toll across the Severn.

I think the last number you gave should be the A449.

I would take the A465 (The head of the Valleys Route) after the A40.

M56 to Chester then the A483 to Wrexham, and Newtown A489 then A470 to Llangurig A44 to Aberystwyth, A487 to Cardigan, then A478 to Tenby.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Thats the way I would go as well. easy tow and very scenic. As opposed to the longer motorway route.

Hi Smithie,  M56, M53, A55, onto A483 all the way to Llandovery, then A40 to St. Clears, onto A477 follow signs for tenby, used 483 road a lot when we lived in south Wales, lots of caravans use that route, lots of lay-bys to stop and have a rest & a cuppa, It will be a nice drive, if you use all motorways it’s a lot more miles & the scenery is not as good.

PS. Good Market & Booty New Hedges Thursday & Carew Sunday & bank hols.

I tried that route and found that once south of Newtown the road became very windy and had high hedges and that between there and the A40 which is 80 miles that there were no places where overtaking was possible so inevitably along that part of the road all the traffic goes at the speed of the slowest vehicle.   This was why I chose the route that I gave above.

Hi Bill, Yes it is a bit winding in places, still plenty of caravaners use it, over the years I’ve been stuck behind lorrys coaches caravans tractors & miss daisy, pointless anyone over taking you, there’s always someone slower up ahead, I don’t drive over 50 down that road anyway and thats just with the car, just sit back and enjoy the scenery, I’ve never towed a caravan down that route only a folding camper. Drove a 7.5 ton lorry up & down that way 4 times when we moved house didn’t have any problems, But we have planed to go to Brecon with the caravan this year so we’ll be using the 483,

So smithie whatever route you use enjoy the drive & enjoy your jollies

We always use the same route as Steve and Sue, it is the most direct and by far the most scenic. It is also the fastest, if we used the motorway route we would need to Average over 60 mph to do it in the same time.

Yes it is a bit twisty and hilly in places, but that's because it ain't Norfolk!

On a point of Interest from Rochdale the route I gave is 220 miles and the route that Steve gave is 217miles. The scenery along my route is spectacular for much of the way and having used both several times it is much quicker going via Aberystwyth.

We shall just have to disagree on this one then, Bill, as I have done both routes several times and the coastal route always takes at least 30 minutes more - and I do know the road like the preverbial `back-of-the-hand` having towed vans down there for over 30 years (we even had our honeymoon at woodlands in Llanon!).

Each to his own, TBH the more people than use other routes the better, as they won`t get in my way!

Hi in all of this above please could someone indicate how long via motorway and how long via A483 route. We used to Holiday in Tenby as a kid with dad towing a trailer and that was always 7 - 8 hours from Manchester (Bury) via the 483 route etc.

Were off to brighton 251 miles all motorway apart from the last 4mls and that is 5.5 to 6 hours.

Just wondered that all. Cheers.

I allow 5 hours for Halifax to Freshwater East using A483/A40, usually 10 mins either side depending on how many `locals` we encounter.
