A quick note to members intending on travelling abroad.
I have just had a concerning conversation with my insurance company.
We were planning to go to Switzerland through Germany in the summer with our Pegasus.
According to Tracker, these countries are outside of the coverage for the Tracker system fitted as standard. The system works in the UK, France, Spain & Italy.
This means while in these countries I would be uninsured for unattended theft as the Tracker would not be active.
Anyone travelling abroad should check this with their insurance company and if necessary remove the Tracker discount.
I imagine this will be down to the necessary hardware that the police require to receive the trackers signals haven't been rolled out as far as Switzerland. I suppose a big drawback with a system like that.

As far I as I understand it, Tracker depend on the police force in that country to have the necessary hardware installed into their police vehicle to be able to track their devices.
Phantom just uses the mobile phone network to communicate , so they can track it anywhere in Europe without the use of any specialized equipment. Hope that helps

Same probably applies to the Phantom system!
Not at all, our unit uses the mobile phone network to relay the GPS information back to us. So the police do not require any special hardware to track our devices, we just tell them exactly where the vehicle is.

Tracker uses VHF whereas Phantom use GPS/GSM so if you have a Phantom system installed your caravan can go missing even in the UK. Also VHF is more difficult to jam than a GPS/GSM system so in effect no matter whether in the UK or Europe it si just as easy to nick the caravan. My money would be on tracker as they seem to have a better customer service relationship and their prices are more competitive including the annual fee.
Unfortunatley nothing will stop a determine thief from stealing your caravan, however with most trackers hopefully they can be stopped quickly unless the caravan is isolated in a shed or container then only Tracker will work.

So if it is in a foreign country, the police are happy to repond? Jamming GPS trackers is a favourite pastime in some countries besides hiding the caravan in a metal clad barn or container so how do you get around that?
There are pros & cons to both systems. My understanding is:
Wider coverage with the Phantom, whereas the Tracker appears to be better if the stolen item is stored off the GPRS network or in a shipping container.
I did not start this thread to damn or praise either system, I was just making people aware of an issue that could cause their insurer to refuse to pay out even if the owner to their knowledge had done everything they thought was necessary to abide by the terms of their insurance.
After phoning my insurance company to complain that it should have been made clear when I took my insurance policy including full european usage out I was not informed there was a posibility that I would not be fully covered in a large part of Europe, they investigated further and contacted the underwriters. They have come back that for a £10 admin fee they will amend the policy to cover up to 2 weeks with the Tracker off coverage. I have to phone them with my travel details if I wish to go ahead.
The matter has been refered to managers and they are considering amending their policy booklets to make this issue clear.
I recommend that you let your insurance co. know if you think this could be an issue for you so they can't wriggle out of any claim if the worst should happen.
I have just done ny van renewal with CC and have asked the question about this issue. They apparently have had this as a recent query and I am assured that the discount for Tracker is still available and cover unaffected when in Europe and Tracker cover is unavaulable. They have made a note on my policy details.
