Hi All, Think this question is for all you lady members, My OH sent me out to van to bring in the curtains to get washed, then noticed that they are quite faded, where the light has been hitting the exposed part of folds, now have two tone curtains, curtains are an aqua greenish colour, and now it has stripes where faded, what can be done, can they be dyed, or is it a case of new curtains, they also have a linning. all advice would be very greatfuly received

The easy answer is "how much money you wish to spend". If you have the money, your best and nicest but most expensive option would be to go for new curtains to match your upholstery and there are quite a few places advertising in the caravan magazines who make curtains (they also do reupholstery). The other alternatives are to make your own new curtains if you can match a fabric to your upholstery and you are able to make them - I made new curtains about 30+ years ago for an old van we had at the time and they turned out well but I do sew and have a machine. The last and cheapest option is to carefully dye in a similar colour to what they are at present but you may find that the dyed curtains are still 'two tone' i.e. where they are bleached from the sun they may not turn out quite the same colour because of the background colours, but should look much fresher again. Why not wash them and rehang and see if you can get away with it as they are.
Good luck!! From J (the other half of Stew)

Hi J and S, Thanks for info, Did just that gave them wash, waiting for them to dry, wife cant sew but has a machine, I gave it a go once or twice, to sew old pair of trousers i used for working, managed to sew them together ok, but you'dve thought i did it after drinking, May try and get fabric to match the upholstery, as always thought they were plain aqua colour, but did contrast quite nicely with the bright autumm beige/yellows/reds of upholstery the big thick embossed kind, have a neighbour near that dose a lot of sewing, think i will have word with her, looks like i will have to go and get the curtain studs to get sewn onto curtains, will also give adds a look, thanks for your reply

I can't believe this question actually, because my wife has just washed our caravan curtains, exactly the same colour and exactly the same problem. Well, she put them in the wash twice but hasn't made any difference to them so we are not going to spend any money on replacing them. We shall put them back up for now because at least we know they're clean. My wife also has a sewing machine and could possible make some new ones but the problem is that there are several plastic poppers on a plastic strip that fix into the top of the curtain and she thinks that a domestic sewing machine is not capable of refixing the plastic strip and will need to be finished on an industrial machine due to the thickness. I will keep an eye on this post just in case someone does come up with a remedy.

Hi
Curtains are not difficult to make, specialy as you have the curtains to copy. Just remember the saying measure twice cut once! If you get machine needles to sew leather or denim that should sew the plastic if its not to thick, often having the correct needle makes all the diffence. dont forget to match any patterns.
Good luck

If it were me I think I'd just wash them then re-hang them very carefully making sure the folds were in the same place they used to be so the fading wouldn't be obvious. We never close our curtains anyway - just use the blackout blinds, so noone would ever know...

Hi, Thats how our curtains got that way to start with, used to work in sewing factory as a storeman when i was a young lad,the different types of cloth and thickness the women sewed was unbelevable, more so when it was a homer, i know how the sewing is done, could re-build a van,but cant sew a straight line,if compaired to drink driving, i would have 12points for my attempt.

My mates curtains were thesame, ended up pink striped! She actually dyed them twice and they looked a lot better afterwards, but what you have to remember is to use a darker dye, not try to dye them the same colour, but go at least three shades darker.

Hi all, thanks for your replys, curtains now dry, and look worse than they did before wash, they look totaly washed out, they are a velvet or velour material, might look better after the iron run over them,if not them go down the dyed road see how that works, then very possibly new ones, either way i have a trek indulging in my much hated pastime (sorry ladies) Shopping. having said that its of shopping to caravan shop for a few things,( have selective shopping syndrome ) thanks again.

My wife said that you are not suppose to iron velour material as they go shiny but you could try ironing the lining on the reverse side. The material is very much like courdroy trousers which she also irons on the inside for the same reason.

Hi, Just a wee up date, Checked out the curtain material (Velvet) £16 a meter, not sure of the width cloth comes in (assistant did'nt know) approx.5 or 6 meters needed at the max of 6 meters would be £96 then the cost of linning and popons, and on top of that the price to make them up plus the time, so think final tally would be £150 - £200,and there's me thinking £60 to £80 would do it, well seen im just a bloke, One other option i may consider, that is just paint curtains onto window,

checkout ebay for fabrics, much much cheaper.
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/pandoras-upholstery
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/fusionfurnishings2010/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
I just got 17 metres upholstery fabric from fusion for £25! £1.48 a metre!
Just making new curtains and have bought new popper tape and will use denim or leather needle on machine and used old curtains as pattern. I'm re-upholstering, making new curtains and re-flooring for £150 so definately worth DIY job
