Can anyone recommend a battery charger for a carvan battery and where I can buy one from? I understand these are called smart chargers and charge the battery in 3 stages?
Any advise or recomendations greatfully received
------------- Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't.
I would have thought that a 3 stage charger would have involved a booster at some point which you want to avoid at all costs. The advice is always to trickle charge as your battery will last longer. What the difference is technically I don't know but this is just a sheer guess that's all. I can only comment on the type I use as I still use mine 6 years later without problems. I know that caravan outlets also sell them so they should be the required unit I would have thought.

Well not really; it certainly has the boost as you call it but it is a relatively short phase at 14.4 volt[or there about] and pulsed at a frequency the battery cant gas off at. It does the valuable job of increasing the "State of Charge" from the trickle condition's 80% at the best to nearer 100%.
Not only does this give you increased capacity but the higher charge helps the battery to reach old age and to break down sulphation.
JTQU has provided the technical answer which I couldn't do but I would still rather only pay £4.99 for a charging unit that does the same job. What I would like to know now is what are the actual benefits of paying more for a smart charger than the one I already have? If there is a significant difference such as prolonged battery life etc. I may invest in one in the future.
I use on of these from Halfords they have a sale on at the moment.

Trevor:
I thought I had answered your question?
Your charger almost certainly does not do "the same job".
As it is sold as a trickle charger then at best it will only 80% charge your battery. ie you could get 25% more in it. Yes it charges your battery, partly.
Your battery is progressively damaged by not being fully charged. They all die in service but your helping it on its way out more by what you are doing, partly charging.
A good smart charger not only pushes the battery charge up so reducing this degrading effect, it also helps rejuvenate the early signs of that degradation. Plus of course giving you much more [25%] more capacity.
Whether its worth it to you to pay £13 rather than £5 only you can judge. For me its worth every penny as a good battery cost £100 upward, I want it to give the capacity its capable of and I want it to last.
ps I am still using my 1991 Varta "traction" battery to power my mover up and down my dipped drive, in and out every time we leave the property, typically 21 times a year. I think the old CTEK smart charger is paying for itself in my case even though spookily and with uncanny timing it gave up the ghost today between posting here.
What you say JTQU actually makes sense now because I have found that I am only getting an average of about 2 years life out of a new leisure battery and this is probably the reason why. Also I have had the caravan serviced today and although everything is okay they did say that my battery hasn't got a full charge even after charging it overnight at home with the charger that I have. This confirms what you say, so I have made my decision to purchase one of these battery chargers soon. I'm not familiar with smart charger but is this one that Phil has that you can purchase from Halfords or is the smart charger something entirely different?
Many thanks for this valuable information and it goes to say.....you never stop learning.
If you want to use the standard charger you already have, connect a 12v bulb across the battery terminals whilst you are charging. It maintains the cycling and prevents harsh charging.
