I bought my caravan in late November last year from a caravan dealer. Today I have received a letter from 'Cris Caravan Registration & Identification Scheme' asking for a payment of £12 payable by credit card or cheque in order to release the corresponding Cris document to me.
Is this normal procedure from Cris?
Has anyone else been requested to pay this fee after purchasing their caravan before?
I just want to make sure it's not a scam although it looks pretty authentic to me.
We paid £12 to get our documents last year for our caravan, which was purchased from a dealer. Its normal, upon transfer of ownership, not sure for first registration, never had a bran new van.

Not had to worry about this ourselves as we have a folding camper but looking at the CRIS website it appears to be the normal fee for notifying them of a change of keeper
jasper15, it's not a brand new caravan, I purchased it second hand. It seems like this is the norm then but I can't remember having to do this when I had my first second hand caravan and that was a 1992 which was also Cris registered.
It is correct, if you want to be part of the scheme, then as purchaser you have to pay the fee, unless a dealer offers to pay as a part of the deal, which I understand most do on the sale of a new caravan but not second hand.
Could be the best £12 you will spend on caravan stuff!

Many thanks folks for your replies. I will now pay the £12 fee knowing that it's all legitimate and not a scam.
I have since looked at the website but you hear so many stories about scammers attempting to steal personal details and committing fraud these days that I thought it best to ask you trusted people first. At least I found out what I wanted to know. Thanks.
Just as a side line from this, beware if you are ever selling a caravan privately. The potential buyer may ask you to forward them the CRis details up front and then use them to clone or try and re-register the caravan in their name.
I know this as I spoke to CRis about it earlier this week, as I am currently in the process of selling a caravan privately and I had an interested party that wanted this info up front. On the surface it seems innicent, you think the buyer only wants these details to do a HPi check or the like. But I was wary and called CRis for some advice and they advised me not to release those details until the person has seen the caravan and wants to buy it to help ensure the interest is genuine.
Also CRis told me that to re-register a caravan the CRis doc (like the car's V5 log book) isn't required and if a request is made and they have not been notified of a sale they become suspicious and will contact the owner they have recorded as the last keeper of the vehicle.
Thanks Chowey007 for that information, it never entered my head about this but many thanks for your input. I will admit that this thread has been quite an interesting topic to say the least and have learned some interesting facts.
