I've taken the occasional cat or kitten but only if they've been ill and needed regular medication, it's not something I would normally do. The last time I took one camping - in the tent, not caravan - was last September.

Take your cat? No way would I ever take any of my cats. If I'm just going away for a few days I leave them on their own with dried food and plenty of water. They have a cat flap so can come and go as they please and I have one of those water filter machines which keeps the water clean as well as leaving a few other water bowls. My cats would be so miserable if I kept them couped up in a basket on holiday and I would be terrified of them getting out and going missing. Can't you get a family member or neighbour to pop in once a day while you are away? That way they can open & close curtains and just generally keep an eye on your property as well.
When we spent a year travelling round Europe with our caravan we came across a number of fellow travellers, of all nationalities, who took their cats with them. In fact one Danish couple we saw in a Spanish campsite had three cats and a parrot in a cage! Some people had their cats on very long leads and attached the leads to a hook hammered into the ground, so the cats could wander all round their pitch but not escape. On the other hand some people simply let their cats out and the cats came and went as they pleased. The cats all seemed perfectly happy and healthy. We've occasionally seen this in English campsites as well. As a cat owner myself I would love to be able to do this, but my cats don't like travelling and would probably run away if we let them loose! I think it depends on the cat's temperament, and you would probably have to get them used to travelling from an early age.

Sorry, but I have to ask - what do you call 'a few days'? What happens if the food runs out? I know cats are independant creatures and don't need as much looking after as dogs, but no way would I leave mine for more than a day without someone - usually my son - coming in daily to check on them and top up their food and water supply.

I would have liked to take our Dumby, but we had another cat when we got him, and they quickly became firm friends. We tried Dumby later when Freckles had gone, but he hated it. We did leave him overnight sometimes, but no longer. We met a German couple in France who had the most beautiful Maine Coon cat with them, she loved travelling in their motorhome ( So would I, it was lovely).
Seen a few people do it - all cats are different so people shouldn't just judge by their own ones !
As long as you're connfident your own cat/s won't stray (or pee up people's tents) then why not ? Might be an idea to try somewhere not too far from home for a weekend first to see how it goes.
As for them wandering off, some moggies are quite happy to be on a harness & lead when out if they're used to it from a young age it's no problem.
TM you get automatic feeders don't you ? I think they will store enough food for several days at least. Personally I'd make sure someone looked in to see the ctas were ok but plenty of cats would be fine for a few days, especially `country' cats. A few days is more than two (that's a couple !) & less than a week surely ...fine I'd say.
Different strokes for different folks - & cats too.....

Our cat has been caravanning with us for the past 6 years. We put her into a travel box in the car and when we get her on site, we just open the door and she does her own thing which is to find the most comfortable spot to kip in the caravan. She has never been on a lead and wanders aroudn freely. A few of you have met her!
We take our two cats with us and our dog. One is a feisty thing so is on a harness and lead. She has escaped but came back after a short while, the only trouble was it was 0300 so we couldn't really call her, but she got fed up of being out. We have a wire to put up between two trees or wherever we can and she can wander up and down if she wants but she prefers sitting under the van watching everything.
The elderly cat 17yrs, has started having anxiety attacks if I leave him but settles fine in the caravan and doesn;t even want to go out..
I often think I'd love to take my cats BUT ... my older cat shouts VERY VERY LOUDLY from the second she goes into the box to the minute I let her out when we get home! Even the 5 minutes drive to the cattery we use is 5 minutes of total hellonearth! Miouw miouw miouw miouw non stop!!!!!!
My friend always takes her 2 cats in the caravan. She has had them since kittens and just lets them loose in the van for travelling where they settle on the bed, and on site they are allowed out by themselves. As a non cat owner I assumed this was normal?
we always take our cat with us ,she can be noisy on the journey but we live with that, she is nervous but when she's on site she'squite happy in the van .she goes out on a lead around the van and if she does escape she has always been under the van and is coaxed out with a titbit we would never put her in kennels because she is a bit nervous and pam would rather sell the van than leave her at home.

I don't want to criticize but I don't think it's a good idea for your friend to leave her cats loose in the caravan when travelling, even if they do settle on the bed. What would happen if there was an accident and the caravan overturned? At best they could be injured, at worst they could be killed. Much safer for them to travel in carriers in the car.

We put our cats on the shelf at the back of the car, but one did make a noise. GS put her next to him and she was fine. The cat we lost last year would yell in the car, and did all the way on the hour and a half journey to the airport, as soon as we got there he shut up and didn't make another sound until we were returning a month later. He was on my mother's lap as I pushed her through the airport in a wheel chair and mewed all the time. Which really cleared a path for us better than a horn. We checked in he quietened down and was fine for the twenty hours we were travelling. The next time we flew all three were fine. Now we have to two cats and a dog so they all come camping with us. I wouldn't take the cats without them being in a carrier though.
