Hi everyone, we are new to camping and have just purchased a large second hand trailer tent and are looking for a site, not too far from Sheffield that will enable us to try it out, learn what we're supposed to be doing and keep the kids entertaineed without spending a fortune!! Not too much to ask I hope, any advice / tips, gratefully received.

If you're a C&CC member there's Crowden (Glossop, just off Woodhead) but don't think it's an all year round site...  They may well take non-members.  I've heard it's a  good family site - no entertainment or anything but child friendly & lovely walks etc...

Don’t know about any sites, but a good tip is to take some 4 or 6 inch square off cuts of ply for under the legs & bed supports the ground may be very soft, and don’t forget a little spirit level to get it nice and level, take your time & don’t try and rush it, it may take over an hour the first time, Happy Camping

PS. If your on hard standing don’t forget you’ll need some rock pegs.

Hi,

we went to Orchard Park at Tuxford last month, which is about a 40 minute drive from Sheffield. It's fairly small, but nice and flat so it should be easy to pitch. It also has a playground for the kids and an orchard for them to run around in.

Very close to to Clumber Park as well which is fantastic if you're in to cycling.

Hi and Welcome

You may get a few more replies if you post in the trailer tent and folding camper section :)

What tt did you get?  I've got a Conway Classic which we bought recently that we haven't yet put up.  We want to put it up at least 3 times before we go away in it so that when we arrive on site we know what we are doing lol.  Do you have any space at home to put it up to familierise yourself with it?

Hope the camping area at Orchard Park is better than caravan pitches at the top end by the orchard,it was so wet and muddy our caravan sunk and we could not get to the van without wearing wellies.

The staff swapped our pitches around when we arrived as we have a 4x4 and gave the last hard standing to the people who turned up as we were booking in.

Site has small but clean and tidy toilet block, not much in the village but Clumber is good, shame you cannot in there camp anymore

Not our favourite site.

Andy

Thanks for all the tips, what a fantastic site this is!! The TT is a Cabanon Jupiter and it's huge!  We don't have space to erect it at home unfortunately, but have put it up once to try and managed to rip the awning right at the front on the top seam so hopefully will be able to get it repaired.

Is there any 'list of essentials' other than the obvious like bedding , cooking utensils etc?  Seems like we have loads of stuff but am sure there is something we won't have thought of (like the very useful tip re the spirit level).

Must admit, I am very nervous about 'going public' and it being blatantly obvious to all and sundry that we haven't a clue!

list, most are caravan but some apply to a trailer tent.when we got our caravan at first we went to the nearest site to test the water.items required and not taken could be picked up in a short drive.don't forget the tin opener,we did and it was really hard to find one away from home.take an extra blanket just in case.

Do any of your really good friends have a large garden?
Always best to stay very local, and relatively sheltered, for your first dry run. Also check the weather forecast first, or it may rain on your parade. We did this with our tent, and then had a party/barbecue. It rained during the night, and we had to wait three, or four days for it to dry out. Plastic cutting boards from Wilkinson are ideal bases for underneath the legs of your TT.

Regards,
Jim.

Make sure you take something for your kids to do when you get there, if they're not old enough to go to a playground or entertain themselves. Our two year old always tries to 'help' but ends up getting in the way!

We find that a toy hammer is an essential piece of kit!

Surely for one of your first trips, a site like Haven Thorpe park in Cleethorpes is a better bet.

Easy to get to From Sheffield (M18 - M180 - A180), has all the necessary amenities and entertainment for the kids.

Really dont worry about 'going public'.  Yes it's obviuos when someone is new to any form of camping but I'm sure if you get into a pickle there will be pleanty of people who will be more than willing to help.  When we took our first trip in our caravan we told the wardens when we booked in and they made sure we had a pitch that was easily accessable and came by later to make sure we were ok.  When we had our TT we found a small compass usefull so we could make sure we pitched the way round we wanted.  Dont sweat it just take your time and enjoy yourselves.  Oh yes, dont be afraid to ask if you get in a muddle with something.

I remember when we took our trailer tent out for the first time. I never attached the tent canvas to the trailer canvas and proceeded to build all the frame. I was feeling on top of the world when i finished the assembly only to realise that i couldnt reach the top of the frame to get canvas on. Has we were on a site we went to a lot the owner came over with his son and it was soon all handa on deck to get it done. I soon learned that has you assemble the frame then pull canvas along with you, a step or brush is good for this has you cant reach. everything else you will do has you go along really and you will find what suits you the best.
