our towcar has decided to break its timing chain causing catastrophic engine damage.we have been quoted somewhere in the region of 2.5k to get it repaired or if we can source an engine, the garage will replace it for us but will work out about the same by the time its serviced and set up on the computer etc.
we dont have this kind of money so car is back home in my garage feeling sorry for itself.in the meantime I have my old work buggy to drive around in,which wouldnt pull my van in a million years.
totally fed up today:(

I sympathise with your predicament.

We started tent camping to allow us to get away with the minimum of overheads - Have you considered this as an alternative to the 'van this year, at least it would allow you to still get out and about and maybe enjoy the summer

I`ve heard of 2.2 petrol Vectra`s same shape as yours having chain snapping problems, I seem to remember these being between a certain engine/Vin numbers. These had a different oil supply pipe/jet to the timing chain. later engines had a different jet fitted as will a new chain kit have one included in the kit. I`m not sure on this but was their not a recall to these engines to have this jet replaced maybe yours slipped through without being done? Worth a phone call to 01582 721122 ask for customer service, you will need reg no. and chassis/vin no.

What a nightmare!  And there was me feeling sorry for myself because we've had to fork out for a new tumble dryer.  Kind of pales into insignificance compared to what you're having to deal with.

Have you had more than one quote?  They can vary a lot.  But you'll already know that & it's a bit difficult when you can't run the car into different garages for quotes.

I can understand any spare cash you have will need to go towards the repair but could you maybe book a few days on a local site & get someone to tow the van there & pick it up at the end of your break?  Other than site fees it wouldn't really be any more expensive than being at home & at least you'd have something to look forward to.

Hope you can sort something out for the car.  Maybe a couple of £ on the lottery this weekend?

have tried that vectratot car is only a month out of the extended warranty I bought 2 years ago.what they are saying though is the warranty would not have covered me as my car .....wait for it....IS NOT DESIGNED TO PULL A CARAVAN.Theyre blaming that for the failure as well, saying the engine has had too much stress placed on it.

Car NOT designed to tow a caravan? wonder why Vauxhall do a tow bar [probably made by someone else] also do a designated wiring loom to connect up tow sockets, also dimples on boot floor to pinpoint hole drilling`s for tow bar mounting, also a warning light in the dash with a caravan symbal that just needs a bulb fitting. I think they are trying to use that as a get out. I agree with wenz I`d be pushing the really hard.

Hi fife-bloke, Congratulations on the new born baby, Gutted for you with the car, what about the car auction markets, may find some thing there, or the scrap yards, they could have cars that have been written off with rear end damage, could get the engine, mabe you are able to fit it yourself, get the workshop manual, modern eletrics may be a problem though, Know how you feel about extended warranty, I got one and knew that the wheel discs would need replaced within the year and definetly before the next MOT as garage told me that, took it into the same garage, and they passed the discs, said they were within the limits, and ok, makes you think that the warranty is not worth the paper its written on,just a way to get more money out of you,and come back for its service to them, If you can get some one to tow your van to a site, you will still be restricted in where you can visit, not having car while there, hope you can get it sorted before to long good luck.

i fully agree wenz, however one telephone call to trading standards told me as the car was out of warranty the garage have no case to answer anyway, regardless of how crappy it is.
other than finding a solicitor willing to risk looking silly i havent got a legal leg to stand on Im afraid.
I may well drop an email to the judge in the sunday mail though

When the injectors went on my Avensis it was 3k miles out of warranty (prev company car).  Would have cost us £1200 for the dealer to fix it but they put a request through to Toyota for 'Good Will'.  Toyota agreed & it didn't cost us a penny.  So they can do it, if they want to.  I'd try pushing them to contact Vauxhall with a good will request & also telling them in no uncertain terms that blaming the fact you tow a caravan is a load of rubbish!
