Am looking at buying a caravan with my sister, only question is what age do bunks really go up to? Are they strong enough for a little 12 year old? Also are some makes better than others?
Thanks
------------- Visit Llandrindod Wells! Great scenery, walks, cycling, red kites. Ideal for exploring Mid Wales.
Our bunks are around 5'9 long so should be ok for young teens depending on height really. Im sure I read somewhere that our bunks in our van will hold upto 52kgs but I've had all the literature out of our caravan folder and can't for the life of me find this to confirm it.
We had fixed bunks in our last van- the boys were 13 and 11 when we changed to our current one. However, it wasn't the length that was the issue, as the bunks were both 6 foot long - it was how narrow the beds were and the lack of head room on top. Both are now more comfortable on the front settees ( plus we get a bed at the back for us!!)
We have just changed our van as our 8 and 5 year old were finding the bunks too small. They were 6 ft long but very narrow - they couldn't turn over in bed without banging themselves on something. My eldest couldn't sit up in bed to read either - the head height was really low.
We are changing to a continental van with much wider bunks which should last them much longer.
We have a lunar zenith six and I can comfortably fit in the bunks and I am a 6" 2 adult!! Obviously this was done just as a quick test as I'm not sure they are built for my weight!!!! The size of bunks vary hugely - we looked at a Bailey Ranger six berth and the bunks were tiny...
We've recently changed from fixed side bunks to twin lounge. We found that although on paper the bunks were big enough, in practice access into the top bunk was difficult and my 10 y.o. kept banging himself during the night. The children are now much happier and we have a layout that suits us better. Lots of people are very happy with bunks though so as others have said you really need to go and see lots of different vans.
