At the moment we have a caravan which we tow with a MPV. If we exchanged this for a campervan, would touring sites want to charge us for two pitches if we turned up with a campervan towing a caravan (even if we did not use it for camping).
The reason for this question is that we do not want to run two vehicles, and also we would use the campervan for weekends away but would still like the caravan for longer holidays..

Yes they would definitely charge for two units and the reason being that when you tow the caravan with the MPV you park the towing vehicle adjacent to the caravan. If you arrive with a campervan it will be classed as another unit to which the legal spacing requirement is a distance of 11 metres therefore you would charged for two pitches. They would have to do this because if inspectors turn up to find two units together, not just their insurance would be invalidated but they also risk losing their licence for not adhering to health and safety regulations.

We had thought of doing that as we have a folding caravan and overnights would be easier with a campervan. Would we still need two pitches if we didn't unfold the caravan but left it looking like a trailer?

I would have thought that as long as both units are not being used to sleep in, the campervan would count as just an ordinary towing vehicle and common sense would dictate that one pitch would suffice. I would suggest that any site owner that insisted on two pitches would just be being bloodyminded. I presume you do mean a campervan (i.e. roughly the same size as a large car) as obviously trying to fit a larger motorhome and caravan on one pitch would be a different story.
We have just replaced our car with a tiny Wellhouse campervan conversion that is actually smaller than many cars. We tow a folding camper and don't anticipate any problems - we generally camp on CC or C&CC sites and if I do get any problems I will report back.

The best set up we ever saw was a VW type campervan towing a small caravan.

The caravan was a bedroom & toilet only and the campervan was used as a lounge come kitchen.

The beauty of this set up was that if they went touring during the day and fancied staying longer at any spot, they had enough bedding with them that they could stay overnight, returning to the site an their more spacious bedroom the following day.

We spoke at length with the couple and were very impressed by their units. They made no mention of having to pay double and struck me as the type that would not have done so had they been asked.

However all that was in the days before we found (and bought) a Folding Camper and now we have what we consider to be the very best (for us) camping outfit imaginable.

We ave just recently started towing a caravan with our self build campervan and have had 2 weekends away to date.
One at a CC site and one at a C and CC site. I mentioned the set up when we booked and had no problem with either, only question asked when we arrived at the CC site was if we had a gas bottle in the campervan (which we haven't as it's a meths stove) and reason being as mentioned in a previous post regarding safety regulations. If a bottle was present, just means you have to remove and store it in the caravan gas locker.
We also only paid for the one unit, and so far the set up is working great as the van is our only vehicle also.

Many thanks for all the replies. Seriously considering the campervan/caravan option.

I would have thought that as long as you're not planning to have people sleeping in both the camper and the caravan there shouldn't be a problem - the camper would mearly be seen as a tow vehicle.

There's only one way to find out; ask the campsite owners and see if they are pedantic about such issues! I personally don't see why this should be classed as two pitches.

We have pretty much the set up your talking of i.e VW Camper & large trailer tent. We towed a Pennine Pathfinder before that, and have never been charged for two pitches, as our van is just the towing vehicle...we don't sleep, cook or anything else in it on site, and never have in probably 10 plus years.

Works well for us as it allows us to pull up and cook lunch/dinner somewhere nice if we're out and about, act as a changing room/snooze room if we're at the beach or opt to have a sleep over somewhere other than the campsite

When the kids don't want to come on holiday with us anymore, our camper plus a small caravan is the way we'll be going

Tango’s reply sums it up and is well argued.

How does the system work?

All sites require a licence form the Local Authority. Typical site licences have conditions which run “the minimum spacing distance between caravans shall be not less than 6 metres between units.”. They do not say the minimum spacing distance between occupied caravans shall be not less than 6 metres between units.” So a campervan beside a caravan would breach that site licence.

Then there is a condition about density such as “The gross density shall not exceed 30 touring units to the acre.” That would be exceeded with a full site + a campervan

Look at what a site licence is there for. A licence is required for the siting of a caravan for the purpose of human habitation. The conditions in a licence are there for safety reasons e.g to prevent the spread of fire between caravans. Always thought it odd though, that a car can be between each caravan and that if a fire spread from a caravan to a car it would then spread to the next caravan wouldn’t it? There does have to be about 3 m between the car and the next caravan

Helen comments “I would have thought that as long as both units are not being used to sleep in, the campervan would count as just an ordinary towing vehicle and common sense would dictate that one pitch would suffice.”  Now, some Local Authorities have thought of this and their site licences are conditioned that the space between vans should be “….6 meters between each unit in separate family occupation”. So those sites can have a campervan next to a caravan without a breach of the site licence. Helen’s point is in the spirit of the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act.

So, check with the site to see either just what its site conditions are, or whether the site owner is willing to take a chance (after all site inspections by the Local Authority are annually and it may not be due when you visit). Provided you do not use the campervan other than for towing then you are within the spirit of the law if not the letter. You will probably be told that if you use the campervan for cooking/sleeping/sitting in etc you will have to move.

Phil

We have a campervan Toyota conversion (originally), then added a caravan as the facilities and size of the caravan suited us better for longer stays anywhere.

We have kept the campervan for similar reasons as other people; its great for a day out or weekend or OH fishing trip. So we do like to keep it at the moment for separate use and also to tow our caravan.

We ask at each site what their requirements are and at the moment where we store and pitch, they are OK with the fact that the campervan is our towing and travelling vehicle and as we don't use it for sleeping in we park it and use it as a "normal" car and haven't had any problems so far.

Rather than give up using it for day trips we would feel inclined to still take it and take up rollsroyce's excellent idea of leaving it the the car park.
