hubbys going to come in to a few pennys latter this year and we would have 3 or 4 grand may be a bit more to spend on a caravan. so we are not going to be getting some supper new one and as we realy love the van we have now and its layout shes a 1980 award 12 2 we have thought that maybe getting er overhalled was another idea instead of replacing her. i allways think old things were genraily made better than new is that true of caravans. at 30 yeras old we have less problmes with her than i read of newer vans ok we dont have hot watre or a shower but there not inportnat to us . so we have to decied and we keep going from one to another

I think it would be best to keep her actually after all the hard DIY work you have undertaken of decorating and refurbishing the cushions. After all, what does a new caravan offer that an old one doesn't apart from a little more luxury? The aim is getting away from it all and relaxing so if your van is comfortable and meets your needs then I would put your savings to getting out a bit more in your van if you can. After all, you only live once so make the best of it.

the site and storge isnt a problme as shes on the drive and most campings done with whippet racing or very small basic sites we prefare ther feald tolet shower and thats it sits suit us best.Hubby wants to get a tranny van aswell for us dogs and mobility scooter so that stopes us going on strickter sites aswell
we did have a look at a few vans in the price range and the one thing hubby noticed beings tall was the head hight our van has a boat type roof and strate front windows and it feels to him like there more head room not sure if there is but we have had 4 not small people sat comfortbily in the van and didnt feel confined and shes only 12ft long were some of the bigger vans felt more enclosed. like i say we keep thinking keep her replace her. if we keep her she will have to go in at the end of the years and get everything checked and anything even looking a little ruff will need redoing and a good over hall. we havnt spotted any damp but havnet had a meter on her so there may be that to do but i would quiet happly spend money on her if we eep her so we get a few good years out of her and shes got caricter we allways know were over van is and so does everyone elas lol

Not sure which places won't let you take a caravan over 10 years old ours is 20 this year and we use CC and C&CC sites and never had a problem. You keep her and enjoy her!

never been asked how old my van is when booking
think the age thing is more for statics than tourers
why get rid if you are happy with your current van, i wish we had kept our first van ok maybe they were a bit heavier but i think perhaps more stable, like the decor of your van there certainly wont be another like it and ill have to get the wifes mobility scooter customised after seeing yours now wheres my paint lol

I'd probably be inclined to keep her - you have been really lucky and found yourself an elderly van in great condition. A caravan at £3-4k can be just as riddled with damp & other scarys as a much older van & it would be awful if you were to fall unlucky after spending your windfall on a newer van. You could always invest your money until a time when you might need to upgrade your caravan? Maybe spend a bit of it on any further refurbishments you may fancy doing to the current van.
I have heard of sites not allowing caravans over a certain numer of years old but Im sure this is mainly for seasonals - I think the Plassey have this in place for seasonals.
hi fallen angel we were in same situation as you a few weeks ago re little windfall, and we talked about keeping our 1996 van or gettin a new one.the latter won got a fantastic deal wi part exchange on a new 2011 coachman amara 500/5 (oh still wanted large window at back )they are even saving it for us till our money comes so cant wait

Agreed your van looks lovely as it is. My van is now 21 years old and every now and then I look at newer vans and to be honest alot can't compete with the elegance and homely feel of my old van, yes a brand new all singing all dancing van is fantastic but you then have the worries of higher insurance and needing extra security, plus you might feel less willing to do your own individual decorating in a new van.
That 3 or 4k would certainly pay for alot of trips away plus some cute upgrades
I agree with most of the others - if she's sound & you're happy with her you should keep your current van rather than spend the money & possibly end up with a lemon.
we sat on te drive in her tisafternoon and decied shes staying i would rather spen money on getting anything she need redone and get her just who we want her than get rid and end up with a nightmare. she was wll loved by her last owners and well looked aftre not a broken catch spill scuff anywere inside and ok so she needs a new lock on the front boxs and a lick of paint outside. but I think the mane reson i love her so much is shes just like the caravan my mum and dad had even down to the fabric on the sofas and they loved her to bits and had her till they past on so its a little like being away with mum and dad again. shes only little and not very heavy and as hubbys wants a tranist type van for going away any extras can go in that. instead of being the old caravan i think i should refare to her as our classic caravan instead

We have 1991 Abi Award Transtar, 2 berth. after making a mistake with getting a camplet t.t but only because I could not get out of bed on my own as being disabled. So got this c.van. We are having things done (via a link to this site and infor from some of its members) to make sure alls well with it.To be told apart from a few bits that need doing and others we are having done to benefit us both ,as some not necessary for the mobile but disabled will be an asset. It is a solid c.van and well worth it.The compaints heard about newer vans going wrong. Not being so comfortable, this & that going wrong niggley things, the lists goes on. Yet you keep hearing good things about old well cared for c.vans. Keep the one you have, do not waste your money with another that could go wrong within months of getting it anyway, out of its guarantee like new ones can & do.Last on site a couple ha donly just bought a brand new one and was testing it out before going across on holiday to France and found electrics going wrong so no kettle for tea or coffee, so went back to gas after paying out for the electricity on site. The other things started adding to it. They were dreading not being able to get it done. Fortunately the main things would be able to be done, but how many can say they got it done straight away.If it goes dont fiddle with it, if it is okay dont change it. Enjoy you old Abi as we will with our Flossy.
even if she need some pennys spending which by the end of the season she probably will as we were given her off a frend so were still quids in and when i read all the threads on the newer vans like empty this clean that drain this ect and i think all we have is watre and wast barrels a portalo and gas bottles to deal with. I think simpaler is easr for us and suits us better. she has a fire and overn fitted that we have never used so more mod cons are not needed and she has the comfest bed ever. i have even been tempted to sleep in her on the drive when my backs realy bad.
