Hi Topdog. Yes I have used both types on internal fittings and I have use the metal screw type on a caravan exterior where the corner handle came away from the body.
In that case the body was glassfibre and I first filled the hole with Sikaflex before screwing the metal screw in. Because the hole was already there, I snapped of the drill bit end bit, first.
That fixing was still in place and holding the handle two years later when I sold the van.
The metal screw type fixing is particularily good where you are replacing something that was there previously, because you can use the same original hole but make the new fixing far stronger.
At home, the wall bracket that holds our telly on the wall is fixed with the compression anchor bolts and has been in place for about 12 years now if not longer.
If you are putting the comression type ones onto a hard material, where the small pointy lugs will not penetrate the surface, stick a couple of bits of gaffer tape over the area before you drill the hole. That will give the pointy bits something to dig into until the whole thing compresses up tight.
