Hi there, I am hoping you can help as I am baffled to what is wrong with my caravan electrics.  I have an Abi Manhattan 490/5 2001 model, which we took away last weekend.  Before setting off I plugged the fridge in to our household electric supply to cool it down.  When we arrived at the site I hooked up to the electrics but it did not work.  I tried using a different hook up point that somebody else was using and also a different cable, but still no joy.  We did have some power from the 12v battery but not the mains.  I have since checked all the fuses and these seem fine.  I tried the test button on the RDC but this did nothing - probably because power is not getting there in the first place.  Do you think it could be a faulty RDC or MCB? If so how can I be sure that is the problem?  Any advice on this would be much appreciated.  Many thanks, John.

Do your 240v lights work? Is it just the Fridge? In my Bailey Bordeaux we have a fridge power button in the wardrobe to switch it to 240v mains, do you have one?

Hi Nigel, thanks for replying - no it's not just the fridge that doesn't work through using the mains.  Nothing at all seems to be working via mains power.  The only lights that work are those powered by the battery.  I have tried everything I can think of - next step may be to consult an electrician, unless anyone has any ideas??

Are you sure the trip hasn't gone? Many trip switches don't go to fully off when they're tripped by a fault and a switch maybe in the mid-position (you say the test button doesn't do anything). Trips need to be put fully off before they will go back on again. Had this once when disconnecting as the trip(s) can be prone to kicking out during connect/disconnect of van EHU cable.
Only other thought is if the cable has been tugged a bit on the end of the EHU fitting and one of the conductors has become detached from within the plug.

If the trip has been tripped it may be that the fridge 240volt element has blown .

You should open the MCB first then try to reset the RCD if it won't reset then I would suspect you have no incoming supply, you say you have tried a different cable and this didn't work, unless you were unlucky and had 2 faulty Hookup leads.
If the trip resets then switch off all equipment and unplug if possible, close the MCB if the RCD trips the fault is on the internal wiring,if it remains closed then plug in and switch on each piece of equipment one at a time untill the RCD trips to indicate which item is faulty. If your sockets are not switchable then it would be advisable to open the MCB before each operation.
If the RCD wont reset when the MCB is open then the most likely cause would be no incoming supply to prove it you will need a voltmeter or continuity test to prove it.

If you have supply at the hookup entry point on the van and the RCD wont close then it is possibly a faulty RCD,a faulty connection to the RCD or an open circuit between the hookup entry and the RCD.

You say;- I tried the test button on the RDC but this did nothing - probably because power is not getting there in the first place

Unless you have a Multimeter, then get an electrician in.

He will start at the mains output and test that electricty is flowing down the EHU Cable. He will then test each connection to find out where the fault occurs before he starts stripping any units to find a fault.

Any electricity should not be tampered with unless you know what you are doing and have the proper tools for the job.

Do let us know what he finds!

Hi everyone - many thanks for all your replies.  I am glad to say I have today uncovered the fault.  After hours of head scratching I decided to be brave and have a close look at the RCD and MCB's.  I discovered that the plug leading to the back of the RCD unit had somehow come loose.  I can only guess this was the result of driving along a road full of pot holes that led to the last caravan site we visited.  Anyway, after connecting the plug in place, hey presto, all working again now.  I'm glad I saved a few quid on not getting a sparky in to have a look!  Thanks again for the replies, John.

John,

I've recently bought a Manhattan 490/5. Any chance you've got a user manual?

Dan

The most common problem is that the terminations have come loose in your hook up cable

Hi Dan,

Sorry I don't have a manual - would like one myself but no idea where to get one from.  Let me know if you have any joy!

Cheers,

John
