Even the most expensive ones are a waste of time in the wet in my view but lots of sites insist on them to avoid damage to the grass. Doesn't help much on this score either as if it's very wet, you end up with a mudbath just the same.
Even in good weather, the grass grows through the holes and you have a "living groundsheet."
We always put a tarp under ours as they do create a nice soft surface to walk on in the awning and the tarp keeps out the mud and water. We don't usually use sites that won't allow this for the reasons given above.
