I'm sorry Chalkie56 but do you not remember when you first passed your driving test, when you were a learner driver, first picked up your caravan or actually did anything for the first time? People are quick to forget that they were once one of those newbies. Just like people get annoyed with foreigners on our roads not knowing where they are going and hesitating etc... I am one of those clueless drivers apologising constantly and driving slower than the norm when I am in strange countries and large cities. I have only owned a caravan since the 17th of Feb, I have taken it several times on a Sunday to my local industrial estate to practice reversing, parking, 3 point turning etc.. but under the pressure of a narrow lane with oncoming traffic and especially with an impatient other driver like yourself I would panic and all my good practice would probably go out of the window. I do not consider myself to be the caravanner that gives us all a bad name.
I am not talking about being an advanced driver I am talking about just being able to do basic things. If you cannot you should not be on the road. The driving test is now very dificult because we have to improve on the basics. If you feel you are not at a basic stage you need training, both clubs have this facillity. You say that you have been going on an industrial estate to practice - if you are doing things completely wrong then all you are doing is getting better at doing it wrong. As for the vanner in the isle of wight - I consider 20minutes a very long time to reverse a rig about 100 feet - he was not harrased by me - but when it meant that my family and I were going to miss a sailing through no fault of my own then I stepped in. End of.

I can see where you are coming from Chalkie56. We were once in Litton Dale and if you've ever been that way you will know that its almost single track in places. So there was me with the van and another driver without van. I stopped because it was obvious he would not get through and I expected him to back up. He didn't even though there as a passing place within view behind him and none behind me. I ended up reversing the van and having to get close into a stone wall to give him room to get by. Wish I had had your whatsits to get out and drag him from the car and back it up to that passing place!

Phil although I would have liked to drag him from the car I didnt but offeredto show him how to reverse at the same time give him a little lesson. What I failed to tell you was that I planned my route to the ferry using the main roads. And bugger me he arrived before me at the ferry I couldnt believe it. His route took him along very narrow lanes but were much quicker - if some one was coming the other way he would still be there now.
